A horrible thought. Anyone else think this could happen? I hope not. Yao is supposed to be loyal, but to whom? now that Rudy and most of his old teamates are gone.

Too early to be worrying about that really.

The soonest Yao will be gone as a FA will be the summer of 2007.

2007? Isn't his rookie contract only 4 years?

no, haven't given it a thought. Yao will be a rocket for quite some time. The rockets control his rights for another 3 years, then can offer him more money than anyone.

after his 4th year he becomes a restricted free agent meaning we can match any offer another team makes. After he plays 5 years he becomes an unrestricted free agent and is free to sign with any team he so chooses

Paranoia central. He will play here a MINIMUM of three more years, should we choose it.

He has no real reason to like Rudy.

chill out man, Yao only played with Rudy for one season, and Rudy wasnt building the team around Yao. Why would Yao want to go to L.A.

Geez....if it isnt bad enough we have all these Californians bringing this up in hope that Yao will leave from that devilteam (Rockets) and come to the gracious, friendly state of Claifornia where everyone really wants to be........

then we start to have our veterans bringing this fantasy up...

*******. This "Lakers want Yao" thread is like a hydra. You just keep chopping off heads.

Hey, you know something? EVERY team wants Yao, not just the Lakers. People are going to be making him offers all over the NBA. What makes you think the Lakers will be in the best position to get him? What makes you think Kobe Bryant is going to want another star on "his" team, especially a center? What makes you think the world won't have ENDED three years from now?

Go back to your holes. Never come out again, or at least not for another three years.

LA would have to have 14 or so million in cap room to even make it feasible. If they bring in a max-contract guy for shaq they way they're planning, then they wouldn't have cap room till at least 2008 or so. A realistic run at Yao by anyone but the Rockets would take several years of planning, like West did for the Lakers in the mid 90's to acquire Shaq.

Is there a chance Yao could leave after his rookie contract is up? Yes.

Should we be worried about it now? Hell no.

And by the time his contract is up he will have been with his new teammates for several years. I guess now that we can't have anymore Cat or Francis bashing threads we're going to have to have some "Yao to LA" threads. I have 14 million reasons why Yao Ming isn't going to LA. The Lakers just better hope they're not a lottery team next year.

    2007 is pretty far away.

Why do I feel that I am going to have to hear this stupid Yao to Lakers crap for 3 more years?

You have to remember that China will play a hand in where he goes too, and that they will likely push for him to go where he can sign for the most money - here.

Actually it's 2008. The 2005/2006 season is his team option year. And 2006/2007 is his restricted free agent year. So the soonest that Yao can leave without compensation is after the 2007/2008 season.
