I know we’d be overpaying contract wise, but should we consider the closing role discussion with McCullers when he gets back?

Our starting pitching has been really impressive. Plus - his innings will need to be limited.

shade away - I’ve opened my umbrella

I get the feeling that McCullers thinks closing is beneath him

McCullers has pitched far more innings than any relief pitcher over the last 5 years, even after missing a season.

We don't even know how dominant a reliever he would be, and relieving is no guarantee of staying healthy either. All you are doing is getting less work out of one of your best pitchers.

Likely Mushinski, the way the schedule lines up they can go back to a 5 man.

I’d love to see Brown. Sparky says he’s ready.

McCullers will not make much difference this year either way. Trading him could make a big difference in the next few years if we can get some key prospects for him.

Nobody is giving up "key prospects" for McCullers when he is owed 69 million dollars after this season and hasn't pitched since the ALDS because of an elbow injury. The Astros are also not trading McCullers after Odorizzi just face planted and left on a stretcher.

It's also entirely possible that Verlander leaves when someone else offers him Scherzer money in the offseason which is another reason not to trade McCullers.

Well it looks like Odorizzi most likely tore his Achilles. If he did, he'll probably accept his $6.5m player option next year.

A Gold Glove .250 hitting catcher wouldn't be an upgrade.

Is this confirmed because everything I've read refers to his knee. Achilles would suck because he was finally rolling. Feel bad for him and us.

Except this is the first time he has hit over .250 since 2017, and it's a sample size of less than 100 at bats

His X numbers are bad, you mention batting average, his XBA right now is .194, his 84.9 exit velocity is the lowest of his career, his XSLG of .263 is awful and also the lowest of his career. So his current batting average you mention is very much driven by luck and will be coming back down to the .247, .204, .231 numbers that precede this year

Until this year there has been no significant difference in their on base % and Martin has typically matched him in slugging also

So trading assets so we could pick up what's left on the 7.8 million contract he has this year and then let him walk as a free agent next year...nope, not an upgrade

I can't see us going from Martin to another catcher unless we make the decision that offense is more important at that position, and if we did that Barn wouldn't be the guy we were targeting for sure. I think the only way we make a move for a catcher would be an injury to Martin or Castro

I mean I don't know if I'd go there yet, but to me it's troubling yeah. We'll see though.

prolly lowballed him with something insulting like 5 yr 100 mil.
With this inflation, who would take chump change?

Yeah, that's what I would be afraid of too. Now Tucker isn't worth like $300 mill, but $150 and up? probably.
