Not sure about that. They didn't even protect Diaz from the rule 5 draft in the offseason. Astros got lucky that the draft was canceled when the lock out lasted so long. Papierski wasn't protected either. So that makes the Dubon trade even better because Papierski could have been gone in the rule 5 as well as Diaz.

He could actually call games from the dugout when his playing days are over.

So crazy how hard the fans and writers are on the front office. Goodrum got FORTY FIVE plate appearances. They pulled the plug pretty damn quickly. If he’d been close the player he was previously those 45 pa would have been fine.

Except he has been awful the past two years

If they brought him in on a non guaranteed deal to take a look it would have been fine, but guaranteeing him 2.1 million wasn’t smart no matter where you stand on Click

He has been an awful hitter but his defensive value made him an average bench player the last 2 years (0.6 fwar both in 2020 and 2021). The prior year he was a very good regular (2.8 fwar). In hindsight a $2M guarantee was probably a slight overpay but that amount of money is completely insignificant.

If nothing changes and Goodrum is let go having put up 45 pa of sub-replacement performance for $2.1M, it will still not even register on the list of transactions that will determine how Click should be judged.

Click has made 1 clear misstep (Baez) on a 3rd/4th tier free agent deal, and has 2 2nd/3rd tier extensions (McCullers and Pressly) that don’t look that good so far. Those are fair criticisms (although the Baez deal receives far too much airplay and the other 2 have yet to fully play out). These tiddlywinks deals for under $5M are meaningless and it’s silly to use them to try to build a case that Click is an underperforming GM.

That 2 million only makes a difference if it prevents us from getting somebody good because of salary cap/budget. It will not, so it's no big deal. Baez is the only really big mistake he made. Odorizzi looked like a mistake until he didn't.

Goodrum's production the last 2 years were worth $4.5M and $5.2M using FanGraphs objective numbers. Using objective numbers that include great signings as well as the true duds like getting nothing out of $66M would indicate that odds were at least decent that Goodrum would be $2.1M.

Except if we make deals to get back to the salary threshold every little meaningless million counts

People criticizing Click for the Dubon deal are likely off target, I think that will be a good deal and Dubon is only available because they need the roster spot for LaStella

But saying it isn’t fair to criticize Click for the Goodrum deal is also off target. When you are the one who pulls the trigger on decisions, you get both credit and blame. Hard for sane people to credit him for guaranteeing money to Goodrum

    Lol

I know batting average isn’t a real meaningful stat but I’m not gonna waste the time looking up all the others

He hit .214 and .184 the past two years. If that’s worth 4.5 and 5.2 million to fangraphs I’m not sure I would pay much attention to their stuff anymore lol

He would have to be the defensive combination of Adam Everett and Andruw Jones to be worth that kind of money

Now in 18 and 19 he looked like he was going to carve out a nice mlb career, the past two years he was awful, and someone he got worse

If the criticism is objective and uses objective measures or even subjective measures within a reasonable proximity to objective measures, sure.

Goodrum makes 1% of the Astros budget. If you want to blame Click, take a holistic view or at least focus the narrative on the big budget items. Verlander makes over 10% of the budget and over 50% of the budget expenditures of the offseason budget.

Adam Everett provided about 5 times the value of Goodrum in most of his Houston years. Goodrum is awful for an average MLB player or starter. Those guys make $15-20M on the open market. Basically, $2.1M is like saying Goodrum is worth 10% of an average player. That was a decent bet in the offseason.

The closest player in salary to Goodrum in FA was Heath Hembree and his current 7.5 ERA. Closest position player is Culberson at -0.2 WAR which is better than Goodrum's -0.3. If you think Everett and Jones are good comps for that price, I assume you think Hembree and Culberson are equivalent talent to them. Either that, or your comps are way off for that price point.

The odds were just in favor that he would get to .100 before he dropped to .050.
