Lets explore some realistic scenarios and turn it into a game.

Here is the list of players.
    https://www.spotrac.com/nba/free-agents/2023/

Here is a mock for next years draft
    https://nbadraftroom.com/p/2023-nba-mock-draft/

    Tankathon
    https://www.tankathon.com/mock_draft

For this thread, here's the ask.
1.) Run tankathon for 2022 - select who the mock says the Rockets pick or your choice of anyone mocked behind them.
(Mine was Ivey at #4, Eason at #17)
2.) Predict what lottery spot the Rockets land in 2023 (Mine is 5th worst team in the league)
3.) Run tankathon for 2022 again, but this time assume the Rockets are in the slot you predicted in #2 above (Mine was Indiana who moved up to #2 in this simulation)
4.) Go to 2023 mock site and draft any player on or behind your simulated pick. You don't get to reselect who you take in 2022 based on who get in 2023 (Mine was Scoot at #2)
5.) Determine if KPJ / Tate stay or goes in Free agency
6.) Spend your cap space. (Assume 90 million - less if KPJ and Tate stay)
7.) Lay out a depth chart.
8.) Assess how happy you are with your results.

    Here is mine:
Rockets draft Jaden Ivey with #4
Rockets draft Tari Eason with #17
Rockets draft Scoot Henderson with #2
    Let KPJ / Tate walk
    Sign Lu Dort
    Sign Myles Turner
    Sign Steven Adams

    Depth:
    Henderson / Christopher / Nix
    Green / Mathews
    Ivey / Dort / Nwaba / Martin
    Sengun / Eason / Garuba
    Turner / Adams

I am thrilled with we got so lucky with next years draft and that is a serious set of smalls, but there are major defensive concerns. I advocated for Green over Mobley in last years draft because I saw a glut of bigs available in the next two drafts. Turned out to not be the case in my simulation.

Quickly becomes apparent how difficult it will be for Nix / Martin / Garuba / Mathews to be anything more than 3 stringers unless they take significant steps forward.

Rockets draft Jabari Smith at #4
Rockets trade #17 and Mil pick to move up for Eason.

Rockets trade Tate to acquire an early 2nd rounder. Take Roddy.

Rockets trade Wood+Gordon for a relatively protected 2024 pick to offset loss of pick to OKC that year.

Rockets draft Victor W in 2023. Rockets sign Kevin Porter to a 3 year 50 million deal with each year non-guaranteed.

Memphis is solid but tops out at 2nd in 2022-2023 and 2023-2024. Ja Morant decides that Houston (his team as a teen) represents an opportunity to go further. Memphis agrees to a sign and trade for Brooklyn picks.

    Victor/Garuba
    Smith/Sengun
    Eason/KPJ
    Green/Christopher
    Morant/KPJ

Ok I'll play your little game.

    Mine came up
    #2 Jabari Smith
#17 Ty Ty Washington, Tari Eason was at #19 (Im picking him instead)

[ Jabari Smith and Tari Eason ]
    ________________________________

With Jabari and Eason plus the progression of our young players plus Silas
actually allowed to coach to win......I'm going with the Rockets 41-43. A Cavs
like jump. Putting the Rockets at #10 in the draft.

Simulator had Rockets stay at #10
I have the Rockets drafting Dereck Lively (Marcus Camby/ WCS with 3-pt range)

    _________________________________

    Tate is traded by then

    Wood gets traded by then

    _______________________
    Sign Chris Boucher this summer

Free Agent Pick Ups next summer:
Brandon Clarke (I think we can poach him from the Grizz)
    Jaxson Hayes
    ? Myles Turner ?

    _____________
    Depth Chart (23/24)
    Kevin Porter.......J Christopher
    Jalen Green........Mathews
Jabari Smith.......Kenyon Martin / Brandon Clarke (FA)
Tari Eason..........Boucher / Dereck Lively (rookie)
    Sengun..............Garuba / Jaxson Hayes (FA)

I don't feel like fully answering this questions but as far as the free agent part we sign Victor Oladipo to instantly catapult us to contender status.

Okay I’ll bite. Dream scenario, but still in the rhelm of possibility:

    draft Chet or Jabari

Trade Wood, Gordon and Tate for future protected 1st round pick and move from #17 to #10 to draft Eason

we sit out 2022 free agency

we lose in the play-game, but the lotto balls bounce our way and we get a top 7 lotto pick

seen as a team on the rise we sign DeAngelo Russell away from Minny. (No Jokic is not leaving Denver for Houston -let’s keep it in the rhelm of possibility).

KPJ coming off issue-free season resigns to play 6th man of the year role (did I say realistic?)

We make the playoffs in the 2023/2024 season behind a starting lineup of:

    DeAngelo
    Green
    Eason
    Chet or Jabari
    Sengun
KPJ 6th man of the year and head screwed on straight.

Obviously in this scenario we should trade for Jalen Brown.

That would make for a colorful wing rotation.
