It's official, game resumes at 12:10 manana. 2nd game 30 minutes after the 1st. Full afternoon of baseball, and I'm taking the day off.
I’m glad I went to yesterday’s game instead of today’s. Got caught in the storm in my car. Got off the freeway just as it was really staring pour, couldn’t see much past the hood of my car and there was hail pinging down. It’s still raining here in Minneapolis and there’s supposed to be another line of storms coming in tomorrow. We’ll see if they can get the rest of tonight’s game in or even tomorrow’s scheduled game. Could be possible both are rained out.
Lucky for this rule change: https://www.mlb.com/glossary/rules/suspended-game Definition A suspended game is a game that is stopped early and must be completed at a later date from the point of termination, though not all terminated games become suspended games. The most frequent cause of a suspended game is when a regulation game is terminated due to weather, and the game is either tied or in the midst of an inning in which the visiting team has taken the lead. Other rarer causes for suspended games include a technical malfunction in the stadium that prevents the game from continuing. Prior to the 2020 season, if a regular season game was terminated early before becoming official, the results up to the point of the termination did not count and the game was started over at a later date. But as part of MLB's health and safety protocols during the COVID-19 pandemic, all games cut short before becoming official were resumed at a later date, rather than started over from scratch, during the 2020 campaign. This matched the rules that have been in place since 2008 for all postseason games and any tiebreaker games added to the end of the regular season
This was the Twins pitcher who was supposed to start the inning before delay https://www.mlb.com/news/yennier-cano-mlb-debut Yennier Cano makes history (for now) in rain soaked MLB debut So, Cano's official debut date will always be remembered for how he never actually threw a pitch. For now, Cano joins only one other pitcher in Major League history to appear in the official record books without having faced a batter: Larry Yount (brother of Hall of Famer Robin Yount). Yount took the mound on Sept. 15, 1971, for the Houston Astros, but injured himself during his warmup pitches. Yount never appeared in a big league game again.
That’s brutal. You make the show, get a uniform, appear in a game but never pitch to a single batter? Ouch.
The latest forecast info says the storms might not get here until later tonight so good chance for both games to get in. Very likely last night's game get's done but depending on how long it takes to finish that we could see them unable to finish today's game.
Javier on 3 days rest from his tandem start on Sunday, so would presume he could go at least 2-3 innings if need be. It is fortunate that play was halted at the end of an inning. Basically sets up as a normal game with pitchers able to be prepared as so.
Stros have been impressive. They can go on a serious run here with that strength of schedule and their bats returning to the mean. They are due for a torrid offensive stretch.
I would guess Javier may go today or tomorrow and Urquidy will make his next start on normal 5 man rest so the rest of the rotation effectively stays on 6 man. We'll also get an extra arm, hopefully we can keep the cushion we had and we can limit use of the main arms in the first game.
With Garcia on 5 days rest and Valdez on 4 days rest, Astros should have Garcia mop up 6 innings with Valdez starting the second game (or other way around) on normal rest. Odorizzi tomorrow on normal rest. Javier gets rotation back in order on Saturday. One turn through the rotation on normal rest should be fine for Valdez, Odorizzi, Verlander, and Garcia. They should. One of the benefits of having an extra starter is that two starters can be used on doubleheaders with other starters still being on normal rest for following games. Only reason a starter shouldn't be used is if a good AAA starter is available. I do not want to see Dusty try to get 6 innings from the pen and then have another game.
Yeah I was thinking this should be an advantage over the Twins today. Should be relatively easy to have two starters go today with the Twins likely needing a bullpen game for at least the remainder of yesterday's game which could leave their pen light for the second game.
