I had not seen this. Sometimes you need a hail mary from the football gods to save the franchise from themselves. Impeccable timing of the Flores lawsuit, almost divine. Lovie is as old school as they get. Will their be Parcels and Jerry vibes when a certain someome is lurking the sidelines.
I hope that the Texans pivoting to Smith means that this is the beginning of the end for Easterby. Lovie Smith needs to challenge Caserio and Easterby when they start doing dumb things. He's going to have to win to be able to do that. I think Cal would allow the Caserio/Easterby duo to pick a third head coach, and I wouldn't be surprised if Lovie is gone after a year or two so they can bring in someone else that they really want. But if Lovie can have winning seasons (e.g. 9 or more wins) and show progress it will be difficult for Caserio and Easterby to get rid of him. The selection of Caserio as the GM and the recruiting of Josh McCown as HC were "build around and protect" Easterby type moves. Easterby doesn't want truly qualified candidates in those roles because they are a threat to his power. Cal is too dumb to see that. What's even wilder to me is that the Texans under Caserio have yet to have a real coaching search. They hired Culley to keep the seat warm for McCown. If McCown doesn't take that gap year to be with his family he probably would've been made the head coach last year. What do the Texans see in McCown that they would essentially hold the job for him for 1 whole season instead of hiring the best candidate in the pool at the time? It reeks of another power-play move by Easterby. This is why Flores' lawsuit needs to be successful because the hiring practices of these teams need to be more transparent and independently reviewed. Too many teams hire "the guy they are comfortable with" instead of hiring the most qualified.
I feel McCown and Smith are the "go along, get along types that Nicky Scissors and Disturby want so that they could run the team through. You're right. This has nothing to do with winning football and everything to do about having power. Everything that's going on with this organization leads to that conclusion.
Read the comments. They’re hilarious, they just **** on Cal. He comes off as a complete moron. It’s no wonder the Texans are a joke. If his dad wasn’t a billionaire, he’d be working as a greeter at Walmart.
Janice and Cal hired the HC. Owners who invest billions should be able to hire whoever they want to hire. They risked their money, it's their choice.
Jack Easterby influence is with the owners, Janice and Cal McNair. However, it seems Cal was smart enough to understand that you cannot hire McCown. Caserio did not going to be tied to McCown. Cal loves Lovie Smith, he wanted to keep him in the building as DC, atleast. I think that was the reason McCown was even an option. The Flores lawsuit obviously had an influence. Im sure the league (and a few owners) told the Texans you cannot hire McCown, especially when you interviewed Flores. Lovie was the compromise pick, but the Texans may have lucked into the best situation for the team. This is the end for McCown until he actually starts coaching somewhere. Easterby’s influence for on the field decisions is probably done, for now. Caserio can go back to a more traditional GM role. Easterby will not be fired until Caserio is, unless they have a falling out.
