Part of it is that it is all constantly evolving and society has not decided yet on what is and is not acceptable. Social movements will push beyond what will ultimately be the acceptable bounds when they bring change. We are currently seeing this all play out in front of us. Essentially it is growing pains. I am relatively old for this degree of social change. I have several non binary friends. I have had candid conversations that it is difficult at 40 to see someone that was born a male, that dresses like a male, that has children and a wife, who act in every obvious way like a male, and to not refer to them as "man or he" - because they are non-binary, and they are either gender fluid or they feel like a woman... what I was told is that 99% of people will just appreciate the effort, and will not get upset if it isn't intentional. Using different pronouns like "they" "them" is awkward after 40 years and I screw it up all the time, including with my friends but I have never had anyone get upset.... my point is that terms are important, but most people are not zealots, despite what you see on social media or on CNN or FoxNews.
calling someone they or them is still a little weird to me too not gonna lie, 1st time I ever heard somebody say “call me they” I was like
Agreed, it is very different and harder to get used to than I expected. Still, times change and I don't want to be disrespectful to someone out of ignorance.
for sure…in 10 years, it will probably be pretty normalized in society…at this point in time, I guess it’s something I just don’t fully understand yet
My friend kept using "they" in reference to someone else who was visiting him last week. I couldn't tell if he was saying "they" because this person is non-binary or just to be gender-neutral because he didn't think the person's gender was significant. Hearing "they" over and over to refer to a singular person can be jarring. My brain immediately processes it as non-singular.
I don't think it's going to stick, IMO its a fad to try and gain some control and I don't have any problem with it, if it sticks I will change accordingly.
Woke is more cringe annoying Red pilled (didn’t know this name ) is more annoying overall to talk to and “argue” with you aren’t gonna *win* an argument against either of these factions , but in my experience the woke crowd is at least likely to cede a point or two . imo woke ppl are more easy to deal with and will want to come to common ground . Red pilled are absoLutists and will die defending a false fact . One example is enough to prove definitely that “this is what’s happening”. cognitive dissonance is off the charts . woke people horrible at arguing. Their points are usually sensationalist and they are ok to walk things back if you agree to some premise . Red pilled want to win no matter the cost . overall red pill wins more annoying
How about we use normal terms rather than sensational labels? These labels are used simply to emotionally charge and/or demean people. Liberals: Fundamentally believe everybody deserves a fair shake. Conservatives: Fundamentally believe I have a right to what is mine. So it makes sense that liberals are willing to "walk things back" if you can appeal to their sense of fairness. Afterall, what is fair changes based on context and mutual understanding. Conservatives, however, understand very well what belongs to them so any encroachment into ownership results is loss ...which is something that is fundamentally intolerable.
