Martin Maldonado c 1 year/$5M (2022), plus 2023 option 1 year/$5M (2022), plus 2023 club option signed extension with Houston 4/21/21 22:$5M, 23:$4M club option ($500,000 buyout) 2023 option guaranteed at $5M with 90 games in 2021 (met) So if I understand this, the Astros have a $5M team option to bring back Maldonado in 2023. But it could mean it is no longer an option if that is the interpretation of guaranteed. It isn't exactly clear what is guaranteed, a contract or the value of an option. Doing this to split time with Corry Lee at Catcher and mentor him seems good for all. If Maldy wants to remain in baseball as a coach /manager after his playing days, this is a perfect opportunity to begin the transition. It might also be why Castro is contemplating the next phase for next year.
Maldy's '23 option at $5M automatically vested when he played 90 games last year. If he hadn't played 90 games, the Astros would have had a team option to bring him back for $4M or buy him out for $500K
Alright…I think it’s about time to shut this thread down (thank god, what a terrible offseason). Can we get a series thread going?
Bump Yuli: .212 Hosmer: .376 Not saying my plan of passing on pena was right, just the concern about Yuli and having a plan in place...
A career 279 hitter his close to 400. Yah imma wait until midseason atleast to see how he is doing. I also really like pena being a part of this team
I don't disagree... point i was getting at was if yuli looks done, he becomes a super sub and Pena added. It gives you options... If Yuli is done this year and is hitting. 220 at the break, we would likely need to trade for a 1B... Not saying Yuli is there yet but father time is undefeated... we lack depth at the position in the minors... Diaz would be our fall back right now...
Josh Bell has has a good start to the season and is likely available. I'm sure a couple of mid-level prospects could get him. Say - Kessinger and Tyler Brown?
Maybe Odorizzi? You never know... solid starters have value greater than 1B... Nats have a lot of vets still...
