I was considering getting a DVD burner for my computer. I am going to be doing lots of film work while I scout this coming season and I need a place to store a lot of info. This I know how to do. One thing I would like to also do , is to make some backups of my current DVD's. I know there used to be several software suites that advertised the ability to copy commercial DVD's. Anybody have any tips or suggestions for how to do it and what software to use?
Its kinda funny that I have had my dvd burner for almost a year...and have yet to use it to backup my current dvds. But you are correct, there are plenty of programs that will do a fine job... go to http://www.videohelp.com and you will find more tips and tricks than you could imagine....a great forum is also there fullof knowledgable people.
Use DVD Shrink to backup movies. It's free, and the best. If DVD Shrink can't crack the protection or if the movie is small enough to fit on a dvd without compression you can use DVD Decrypter, which is also free.
I looked into Decrypter last night (found the info at R2K's link). It looks real easy to use. One more question though, once I have the files broken down, will any DVD writing software work, or do I need to get some specific software like Intervideo's WinDVD copy?
The latest version of DVD Decrypter actually has built-in burning capabilities, though I've never used them. I use Nero 6.x, and use it's DVD Video wizard which is incredibly easy to use. It's as easy as dragging all the dvd files into a single directory on the wizard and then clicking burn.
Ok, I got a burnewr that supports +-R and RW. I downloaded decrypter and it worked fine. My burner came with a Roxio program. Will this work. It seems uncommonly easy to use. And should all I need to do is add all the files from decrypter to a project and burn it. Also what is the differnce between the + and -. The disk that came with the drive is a DV-R
for copying dvds use DVD shrink and I have no clue what a DV-R is, if you mean DVD-R it will work http://www.dvdshrink.org/
It goes either way really Dan....I have been using +R and they have worked in every player I have tried and my ps2... the deal used to be that -Rs were less expensive...but that isnt even the case anymore.
Figured this might be a good place to put this... External dual layer DVD burner on ebay I'm getting a laptop soon, and don't really have need for portable DVD burning capabilities, and this would seem more cost effective. $140 including shipping on a DVD burner from a brand I've at least heard of. Is this a good deal?
all they did was take a external enclosure and a nec 2510 and put them together.. The drive itself costs around 85 or so dollars and the enclosure I'm not really sure, maybe you can find one for cheap

Okay, you can buy that great deal (DVD BURNER) from NEW EGG, and then buy a $25 enclosure from New Egg.com and Bingo, you have yourself an external burner for a lot less than $140.
Bad thing is, there is no 8x media for DVD burners. If there is, already, someone let me know... I have a burner and use a Intel's Web Cam Pro to input the video into the PC, and I had nothing digital until I started moving my 8mm camcorder tapes into the PC to pass them onto the DVDs. I have done a few "collection" videos of many days of my daughters' ballet and other stuff onto a DVD. it is SWOO-EET to see them on DVD, and easier to show relatives because anyone has a DVD player now... Mine is a TDK 8x... http://www.tdk.com/dvdburners/indidvd8x8x.html. I bought it at Worst Buy for about 150... back in March... should be a lot less now.
Got one yesterday. I got this model, as well. It had a $30 rebate so I think total it will cost me $109. I haven't had a chance to burn with it yet but I plan on trying it out tonight, backing up "Happy Gilmore"
Wrong. Here's Ritek brand DVD-R 8x media http://www.supermediastore.com/ritek-ridata-g05-8x-dvd-r-cake-box.html http://www.supermediastore.com is the only place to shop for DVD media. You can look for better deals at other sites, but it's a futile effort. The dual-layer (DL) media is only barely available in the USA. Should be readily available soon. -- droxford
