This is almost certainly why this trade happened. Tax distributions are going to be pretty big for non-tax paying teams this year.
Lets assume Norm Powell is worth a 1st round pick and that Keon Johnson (2021 - 21st pick) was the compensation. The question then is, what is Roco worth? He's 31 and an expiring contract at 13 million. His numbers has fallen significantly since 2020 as has his defensive reputation. This season he is avg 7/5/1 on 52% TS. His 3 point shot has fallen to 34%. Roco is probably still a very useful small ball 5 and backup 4 on some teams, but probably not worth much more than a 2nd round pick. So while the trade seems super lopsided, it really isn't THAT BAD... That said, I love this trade for the Clippers as it gives them 2 good/useful players when PG and possibly Kawhi returns later this season.
a healthy clippers team is just as good as PHX and GS. they would have beat PHX last year if they didn't lose Kawhi.
very sure because PG was no longer a no show. he got over a mental hurdle and was ballin. throw in kawhi and i think they win it all last year.
Doing this trade when they did it tells me at least one of those two teams are teeing up another deal and had to do this now. My guess is the Clippers know they are a play in team and not nearly bad enough to tank and want to kick the tires on both improving now and also tee-ing up a damn good roster next season. If they can parlay Covington into Eric Gordon somehow I think that’s a great move for them. For the play in, he gives them a solid attacking guard to play through a bit. But next season you get your two stars a very good shooter and 6th man that makes their lives much easier. We’ll see but to me Covington being flipped here to get someone like EG makes a ton of sense. No idea how the Rockets get an asset out of that but there has to be a three way deal out there for a team that really needs that 3 & D player on the perimeter for a playoff run that’ll be willing to give up an asset to get RoCo.
Do they plan to play Covington at the 5 a lot when everyone is healthy or is this just assuming PG and Kawhi are constantly injured anyway?
Everything has to go perfect, you have to stay healthy, and you have to be supremely talented Winslow A. Can't stay healthy and B. Can't score efficiently at all, his career shooting efficiency is crazy bad, worse than Brewer
