an outgrowth of these 2 landmark legislations passed during LBJ's presidency
    • civil rights act
    • immigration and naturalization act
    a majority of
    • southern white Dem, in protest, switched to Rep
    • Black, who had overwhelmingly voted for the party of Lincoln, switched to Dem

also, some ~59 yrs ago, it was a Republican controlled (nominated by Rep POTU) supreme court that had made the Roe vs Wade decision to legalize abortion

None of you learned about reconstruction history and it shows.

Majority of Southerners supported a social order of white supremacy. Majority of Northerners hated blacks but did not have to live with them.

Both parties after Hayes election turned a blind eye to the evils of the South.

It's insane that this was leaked but it's also kind of insane that they're making this move and it's also insane that they took Merrick Garlan's seat with no repurcussions and also insane that RBG didn't retire. It's all pretty damn insane.

This is against the will of the people. The extreme right is seizing power in this country.

I mean it's really not. The Republican Party is so hypocritical and just full of it, one of the reasons I'm so glad I left the following. Don't get me wrong, Dems aren't perfect and have their own issues but it's like comparing speeding (Dems) to sexual assault (Republicans)...both are wrong but one is so much more wrong than the other.

And now those same elements are back but rebranded. Proud boys. 3 percenters. MAGA.

Demographics are shifting but not if they have anything to do with it.
Abortion? Illegal. Doctors who perform abortions? Criminals. Doctors who perform gender therapies? Criminals. Women who have abortions? Criminals. Women who have miscarriages? Criminals until proven otherwise. Blacks and Hispanics? Criminals. Atheists? Criminals. Teaching school students that people can be gay? Illegal. Gay marriage? Criminal. Interracial marriage? Illegal. Teaching about slavery? Illegal.

you know what these so called Jesus warriors don’t focus on? Ending corruption. Ending kleptocracy. Protecting the sick and indigent. Keeping our air ground and water clean.

no it’s about re-establishing a social order that was America’s original sin.

MAGA was not 1950s. It was 1850s.

There will be enormous backlash. This is wildly out of step with the voting population of the country. Conservatives keep getting empowered by archaic, undemocratic rules... This feels like a very large step in the direction of civil war.

I can’t say what it this does in the short term or long term beyond this will create a hell of a lot of legal issues that can only be resolved with conflict. Like when slavery was A-OK in some states but illegal in others.

Abortion cannot be a murder in Alabama but constitutionally protected in Vermont.

Womens rights are not states rights.

    Time for a constitutional amendment.

The judicial branch shouldn't be passing legislation based on popular opinion.

Ironically some US states will have some of the most restrictive abortion laws in the world once this is done, making the restrictions in countries like Saudi Arabia, Iran, and even Afghanistan look reasonable (which permit abortions for maternal health, maternal life, and fetal defects).

Not what I said or suggested.

However, the makeup of the court is supposed to reflect the will of the voting population, because the voters elect the people who seat the justices. But we all know what's up with that recently. There are far too many and too staunch of conservative justices on the court. Not a big secret or controversial statement.

That's not actually true anymore, it was 15-20 years ago, but there's been a steady growth in opposition to it, to the point where its around 50/50 and they have to do leading questions to create a majority.

It's driven by two groups who are very unlike what they were or expected, first is millenial liberal women, they all know someone who had one and regrets not having a kid as tick tock goes the clock, been a huge switch from their younger years (its interesting watching preference falsification play out in this group when they can't give a private answer), the other is zoomers are unusually strongly against it for their age bracket, and somewhat open about it.

If you don’t want an abortion, don’t have one.

Also none of the liberal women in my social circle who had an abortion regret it because they’re now older. Zoomers supposedly aren’t even having sex so how are they going to have abortions.
