So... either desantis is not so smart and didn't see the catch written into the bill... or, he knew, figured FL taxpayers are stupid, and dishonestly tried to pretend he was punishing Disney when instead he is soaking FL taxpayers...

Disney tells investors state can’t dissolve special district without paying debt

So, apparently, the State can't abolish Disney's zone until all debt is paid.

DeDickless didn't read the fine print - not to mention he was going to stick his constituents with a 163m tax bill every year increasing home owners taxes by 20-25% each....

Typical GOP - go for the photo Op and damn the costs to the peasants.

Nobody seems to realize that all this is in Florida is stupid theatre for GOP constituents and Disney isn't going to lose anything eventually.

    1. There is legislation on the books that specifies the extent of Reedy Creek (Disney World), how it is to be managed, and how it can be taken away or dissolved. The governor of Florida and its legislating body violated these laws with the legislation they just passed. Not only that, this district has residents of Florida living within it. They were not given the chance to have a voice on this (surprise, surprise) and they were not even asked if they wanted that chance. Disney is aware of all this of course and most likely will fight this in court and win.

    2. If the district is somehow actually dissolved, the way Disney is setup they have about $2 billion in bond debt that would become due immediately. Who does that get passed on to? The taxpayers. Why? That same government passed legislation saying counties cannot raise taxes by more than 10% annually. Disney sprawls across 2 counties in Florida but even counting that, that 10% isn't enough to cover the bond debt let alone the infrastructure that Disney currently maintains such as police, fire, healthcare, water/sewage/waste, roads, buildings, etc. I'm sure the government has a way to spin it on Disney and/or Democrats in place if this ever does come to fruition, however but ultimately those costs get dropped onto the taxpayers of Florida so more money out of the pockets of Floridians, of course.

    3. We've seen some people line up to offer Disney a home in other states. Again, if this came to fruition the only people that stand to lose are Floridian taxpayers. Disney accounts for about $5 billion annually in Florida, about 13% of Florida's huge tourism business. 13% is huge, even though it might be spun like it isn't.

In the end, it is just a show to put on for their base but it is most likely doomed to fail, either in courts or for the Floridian taxpayers it will actually affect.

Yes but Orlando primarily votes Dem so this is the new GOP strategy is to stick it to voting areas that are not pro-GOP.

But isn't the tax is a state-wide tax, so all Floridians will have to pay?

Yes, this is true and it's really a shame. The entire GOP position on legislating now is to "stick it to the libs" instead of anything that is actually beneficial to their own constituents.

I believe the bond debt and most of the infrastructure costs would be at the municipal/county levels so it would only affect the two counties Disney sprawls over which are Orange and Osceola, if I remember correctly.

It would be split between the two counties that Disney is in - basically added to the property taxes - remember that municipal services are handled at the county / city level, not state, by definition. That includes trash pickup, fire, schools, and policing.

Imagine the bonds used to finance the Houston stadiums. The county is responsible for the bonds if the tax plan set up (hotels, rental cars, etc.) can't cover it.

No other Texas counties have to chip in in that scenario.

Also, DeSantis is governing Florida with his eye on the Presidency. He is appealing to his nation wide base.

It might, just depends on what happens in 2024. I do think Desantis will noy be very popular to moderates and that it will be really hard for them to drag this culture war nonsense out to 2024 especially if they take control of the house. It's only so long this can be milked.

For his base, they don't care, they are in a cult. Desantis could proven to be an actual pedo and they'd still support him.

Only Employees are Corporate and Security

This thread and the Elon ones. I'm not sure why we have to pick and choose between large corporations and low life demagogues...

I wonder if he is secretly hoping Trump gets convicted for the insurrection so that he has a better chance of becoming the Republican front runner.
