I didn’t hear the comment but if he actually said that then F him We have supported this team strongly. Makes cutting the payroll seem like a plan though, not “saving room” for deadline deals
I believe the context was more in a “positive” light. It was on opening night, huge sellout, he’s thanking the fans for supporting the team… and pointing out that attendance does drive revenues which always dictates payroll (moreso for a team like the Astros that doesn’t have the best tv deal they could have). we know that Crane is as shrewd as anything. 2011 was not that long ago. Even in the midst of this teams best years (2018), I fully expected that Crane at one point would either cash out or oversee another total rebuild if this team’s championship window was fully closed and the farm needed a replenish.
I have no issue with a rebuild whenever we get to the point we have no chance Cutting payroll when we do have a chance sucks And that’s why I phrased it as “if” he said it because I didn’t hear it myself. It’s just worrisome when you have multiple people mention his comment and then you realize he has a GM who comes from a place that never kept their top players
I got mauled on Twitter by Astros fans for suggesting that maybe they should have used some of that cash they’re sitting on for signing someone better than Niko. Apparently though it’s just fine to have to play a hardly even replacement level player multiple times a week if he’s not a starter.
It’s stupid, because a win is a win ultimately, but I hate the last game of a series when you’ve already lost it.
Crane never should have said what he did about attendance. Regardless of intent it will be twisted or interperted seven different ways, mostly negative. Someone correct me but if I'm seeing it right we're about 28-29mil less in active payroll this year. That's a huge chuck of change so are we saving it for the deadline?
