Yup.... and he is considered ancient in that culture. Right now it is all drill rap and that is even dying down. On the South Side of Chicago 5 years is a generation. So someone that is 30 is considered out of the loop.
Oh, about 8-10 years ago...Al Jazeera America (when it existed) did a great documentary on Gangs in Chicago. They see White people untouchable because those are the customers for the drugs and red-meat for the Police actions.
I discovered a very similar situation in Galveston. Cops leave the hood alone except for major crimes, and these are treated with kid gloves. But if the violence spills out of the hood, the cops rain hell on the poor folks. It's ironic that black folks that 'make it' that grew up in Galveston end up moving to La Marque, which, IMO, is much worse. I know cops and people who work in LE in both cities.
That isn't a very big area. If one has an expansive view of Sharpstown as something similar to this South of Richmond Avenue [Westheimer Corridor to the North of Richmond Avenue] East of Sam Houston Tollway [China Town and Alief to the West of the Sam Houston Tollway] North of Bissonet [Geting close to The Meadows, Stafford South of Bissonet] West of Hillcroft [Latin America and then Bellaire to the East of Hillcroft] ................Richmond Avenue............ That covers St Agnes & Strake Jesuit Plaza Americas (Formerly Sharpstown Mall) Harwin Wholesalers and Warehouses Houston Baptist Not quite 6 miles East to West and maybe 5 miles North to South Cut that in half and it can't be an area much more than 3 miles by 3 miles
Yeah it’s a small area in Chicago. More people than you would think because all of the housing is apartments… but even then it isn’t like NYC population density. The shooting gets worse in the summer where they have block parties and gang members will just shoot into crowds when the sun goes down.
Sharpstown has a mix of commercial, single family homes and apartments, so on the low side for population density. I have the apartments mostly two story with probably some three story here and there. I can't see myself wanting to live in a city with a high population density such as Chicago, San Francisco, New Ork City etc. It is only about 7 weeks until June, so the troubles in Chicago will be coming soon.
Not that long ago, there was a shooting at a McDonald's on Westheimer basically at the intersection with Tanglewilde (East of Gessner). I came across an online discussion about it and at least one person was claiming that the area was part of Alief. I had it as a stretch to consider Tanglewilde @ Westheimer as part of Westchase, much less call it part of Alief. I didn't join the discussion, but it did make me reflect on how people define/specify areas/neighborhoods in Houston. Going back to defining/specifying Sharpstown, I wouldn't have a problem if people had the Western edge of Sharpstown ending at St Agnes & Strake Jesuit rather than at the Sam Houston Tollway as I had done.
I went to Sharpstown, and I couldn’t tell you where it begins and ends. If not for Chinatown and my boy starting at Strake next year, and having a sister that still lives there, I’d never go back.
No doubt about it, Sharpstown has changed over the years. Since you are familiar with the area and are in what I consider a related industry, maybe you could answer a question. Brown & Root built a large office complex on Bellaire just West of the Sam Houston Tollway years ago. Then it went vacant and most of the buildings have been torn down in the past year or so. Did Brown & Root melt away or did the people working at that office complex get moved elsewhere?
Thank you for responding. I used to talk to several people that worked for Fluor and they kept me up on the industry gossip. I haven't talked to anybody in the engineering and related construction business for a while, so seeing the demo work Monday at the Brown & Root complex made me decide to ask.
The whole point is the galleria is it’s not in the ghetto But more like the ghetto is everywhere in Houston because there’s no zoning and bail is cheap
