Even Indians have a qualifier and referred to as South Asian versus just Asian.

Cultural appropriation does happen but to say someone can't adopt part of other cultures is essentially being racists. You can't make pasta because noodles came from China. You use paper because it came from China. Can't celebrate Christmas because it's a western thing. Cultural appropriation is a thing, but it's not necessarily bad.

    It's not a gotcha.

Almost half the world is Asian.

The darker shaded variety gets under represented in these convos...

If we’re taking about cultural appropriation I think it’s more than just sharing or enjoying a different culture. I think a lot of what is called “called appropriation” isn’t really that and is an over reaction. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.

I would say that Native Americans have a pretty good argument regarding the use of Native American symbols being used for all sorts of things by non Native Americans. Consider how for suing much of US history Native American culture was deliberately suppressed with Natives not allowed to speak their language or practice their religion. At the same time though sports teams, the US Military and other elements of US Culture used the symbols. Often with little understanding of the meaning of them. To me if you’re going to compel members of a culture to give up that culture even while you take parts of it because it seems appealing for your own use that’s clearly appropriation.

The other issue I think should be called “appropriation” would be how blues musicians and early black Rock musicians weren’t given credit or reaped much financial benefit for music that they created.
