Forgot Doc won in Boston. Coaching in NBA has more value than MLB manager. Poor Dusty was an admitted Gonzalez error from making it with the Cubs. Made the world series without his team's #1 & #2 pitchers. It's amazing how much luck plays into it all. I always wonder if Jeter is Jeter without that missed fan interference call or Brady is Brady without the tuck rule.
But do you argue with those who brag about that lousy rib-eye? I do. I've had two people I just didn't think belonged here. One was Ed Wade who was still trying to prove Philadelphia made a mistake firing him and Dusty Baker with a history of losing in the playoffs with great teams. I'd love to be proven wrong with Dusty, but he makes it very hard. ps Have you noticed that those who love Dusty rarely talk about his baseball moves?
I like Dusty as a person, and he's a HOF coach, but he has a ceiling as did John Lucas as a head coach. I'll have him as a first base coach or bench coach any day... do I want him constructing lineups putting your 25th man in the 3 hole, absolutely not.
Who does Dusty sit today and what bench player gets top three in the BO? Pena, Tucker and Alvarez sit. Siri for Tucker, Diaz for Pena and Goodrum DHs. Because of heavy criticeism batting Goodrum third, he get's moved to leadoff with Diaz hitting second. Maldy bat's third...
Hinch fluffers really had Dusty. They think if they b**** about Dusty enough, Hinch will magically become Manager again. AJ HINCH will NEVER wear an Astros uniform again.
This isn't the type of comparison that can be made on rings or pure playoff success because there is way more randomness and luck in MLB playoffs than NBA playoffs. For example, the Florida Marlins have 2 WS titles and have never won their division. The Braves were one of the best teams for a decade, and got only 1. That kind of thing just doesn't happen in the NBA playoffs (unless you have a pissed off Hakeem). Teams with the best players normally win NBA titles. While a few great players generally cannot carry MLB to WS title, with the exceptions of an elite pitcher at the top of game for a month, a la Madison Bumgarner. If anything, a MLB manager's process can be perfectly sound and correct, and he could still fail every time in the playoffs because that is just how the ball bounced. To be clear, I'm not saying Dusty's process is perfectly sound and correct. I'm just making a point about how to compare managers/coaches between the sports.
