I think people fail to grasp that having a great defender at center, is so much more impactful than any other position, because they can clean up so many mistakes. You can always switch away / pick great perimeter defenders, much harder to get a rim protector away from the rim. Chet has always been my choice because of the defensive potential, and I think he can easily be an efficient offensive player just by chasing the low hanging fruit. No post ups, yes to lobs, dunker spot opportunities, putbacks, and spreading the floor with threes. Don't get fancy and I think he will be great offensively
For me, there is no question he’s the guy if we have the chance to pick him up. That’s going to require having the number one overall pick though I’m pretty sure. As long as we are top four, it’s going to be hard to go wrong, but I’d really like to see this kid fix our corner three problem for the next decade.
living in europe and very busy i haven't followed these players very closely. but from the little i've seen to date, chet is the only kid worth a top 5 pick in this weak ass draft
KPJ has played well enough to where I want to give him another year. I buy the Wood effect personally. The guards need the ball. Trade Wood. We need to then add either Smith or Holmgren. Ideal players for the KPJ/Sengun/Christopher and Green movement in their own respective way. Then you focus the other pick on an impact defender. Sochan or Eason. Daniels as a backup plan.
take Chet and trade Wood to portland to draft Sochan at 7-9. watching Sochan just gives me Barnes defensive vibes with an edge.
Unfortunately two of the top 4-6 prospects in this draft are combo guards or 2-guards. And there’s a realistic chance we’ll be picking 4 or 5. I think it’s gonna be very hard to pass on guys like Ivey or Sharpe if the big 3 are off the board. Are Murray, Griffin, Mathurin gonna be satisfactory? Is taking Duren that early a reach? Where do emerging prospects like Deing fit? with KPJ and Christopher’s emergence, it’s a big question. I’m not sure there is a guard in this draft as talented as KPJ
This is a great article. Focus is on Dieng but has a great and logical argument for drafting Chet Holmgren. I love the length and toolsiness of Ousmane but if I had to choose between him and Jeremy Sochan, its Sochan all the way. Ousmane has more offensive upside but the difference in defensive production, nevermind upside, is a universe apart.
Okafor and Holmgren play NOTHING alike. At all. Okafor is a one dimensional old fashioned in the paint defender/scorer. Chet is a modern 2 way perimeter big, defends paint all the way to perimeter. And scores same way too.
Sochan or Eason? Dieng has the tools to be a good defender too though. Everything is there. I hope they scout him extensively. Could be a star. I don’t see him being as bad as Bruno Caboclo. Lazy comparison, but what if he’s like a Nic Batum?
