I just need a time machine to the seventies when there was a huge selection at every drug store and radio shacks were still around. Way back when TRANSISTER and SOLID STATE were selling points. And when a Big Box store sold...BIG BOXES. Then I could try to talk Cesar Cedeno into coming back with me to play CF.
Yeah- everyone here seems to be arguing that Click is doing a good job because he hasn’t made any egregious mistakes so far. Fine. That’s true as far as it goes. But doing a good job doesn’t mean just not screwing up. If you take no swings and see a gradual decay of the team that’s not doing a good job. You and I are in agreement. One thing- he had a short off-season after the scandal, the pandemic, and then very little financial flexibility last off season. I hated this off season more than anyone in the world other than maybe you, but he’s got 4 months and 30 million available to make important moves to shore up anything that needs shoring up.
Man I swear feeling that crisp 51 degree weather this morning & coming off that victory last night FELT LIKE POSTSEASON OCTOBER
Promoting well from within a company is a move. Click has chosen to let Meyers, Pena, Garcia and other young players take important roles on the team instead of filling those spots externally. If they work out that is good general managing by Click even if you guys refuse to give him credit for it. The farm has thinned out, the organization was already starting to decay after the 2019 season (even before the draft penalties). Click chose to make some choices to extend the window.
Do we see gradual decay? My take is that trusting the most important positions on the field to rookies (Meyers last year, Pena this year) is about as ballsy as you can get. Very very early, but it looks like both Meyers and Pena could turn into every day regulars and maybe even stars. Having SS and CF solidified for below-market value for the next 5 years sets you up pretty nicely. Pena, Meyers, McCormick, Luis Garcia, and Christian Javier have come up just the last couple years, all home grown and all looking like potential long-term contributors. Only Pena was on top 100 lists and he was only on a few. Yes, Luhnow built this incredibly impressive system. It takes a tremendous amount of ego-checking to not come in and blow things up to put your own stamp on the organization. Click hasn't done that. In my view, he's been able to see what is in front of him: a well-oiled machine pumping out good baseball players. Keep it moving. I'm ready for Pedro Leon, Korey Lee, and Hunter Brown to come up as the next wave.
He’s a tweener…. But probably more effective on a routine (i.e;. - starting), even if he can only go 4 innings. He’ll factor into the rotation at some point this year…. But when its not the playoffs, his bullpen utilization is going to be spotty.
Exactly. His biggest strengths based on his history as the Tampa GM was farm system development and putting together dominant bullpens. Last season was the first during this run that I can honestly say I had complete trust in our bullpen late in games during the postseason without having to use our starters. Everyone here was mad about the Straw trade but Maton was huge for us in the post season last year and looks to be a really nice piece out of the pen for us moving forward…
