He also leads the team in offensive rebounds (the ones that you cannot stat pad) in total numbers despite having played much less minutes compared to Wood or Tate, being 7 years younger than both and having spent much less time in the NBA. Oh also his stamina and conditioning is very bad. Consider how many more rebounds he could have taken if his stamina and conditioning were nba level. But he is just not a good rebounder, that's a separate issue. The 'not good at rebounding take' is top 3 with 'Sengun might be out of the league in 3 years' and 'struggles offensively' takes. The bar is very high, or low if you prefer with Sengun takes.
Even if Sengun is a “lesser Jokic” on the offensive end, I think he has an opportunity to be a better defender. He’s disciplined, has quicker feet and good shot blocking instincts for a player without great athleticism.
I don’t question that he’s a good regular season defender. Not sure that will hold against the 5 out lineups teams often use in the playoffs now. I think Sengun has a chance to be competent on the perimeter.
I think peeps just get fixated by a certain style. If you pair Sengun with a Chet or Jab things will be just fine. I used Memphis to make my point with Adams and Jackson shooting 0% and 31%, which Sengun can get too. I heard Roosh and Clutch going back and forth on another team. Can't remember which team but their entire front court is terrible from threes and the spacing is fine. You can have seven 3 point shooters out there at one time but if the ball doesn't move, it's all for not. Sengun is smart and gets the ball moving. The high pace offense. It's nothing new, Milwaukee and the Spurs in the early 80s. On defense, baptism by fire, he'll get better with experience.
you do have to worry that he can hold up defensively as a starter. maybe in a less switch heavy defense we could hide him better on that end.
I think his defensive deficiencies are severely overstated. Once he stops getting ticky tack calls on him and learns when to reach vs not he will be a solid defender. Half the battle is effort and he always brings effort. His steal and block numbers are solid. He’s a better defender by far than Wood right now.
ehhh i'm not sure how you can say that after watching last nights game. kyrie absolute roasted him numerous times.
Kyrie Irving roasts everyone ♂️ Its fair to say he has struggled on that end this season, because he has, but it is completely unfair to expect him to keep up with Kyrie on the perimeter. No big man in this league can do that imo
It’s also fair to say he’s been better than a lot on the team. We’re literally the worst defensive team in the league.
He is having trouble defending quicker players but other than that he does not have a major flaw. I find the switching and pick and roll defense schemes very bad, and it has not improved much over the season. A better defensive coach might help Sengun and others tremendously. He also has potential to become slightly quicker and stronger. I think his body is not in its final form yet.
Absolutely, you can see physical transformation already in his arms. Green and Alp have a lot of physical development still
I don't know why and I know it's too late in the season, but I have a feeling Alpi had his Chapter 2 turning point against the Nets. Unfortunate that it comes with only a few games to go, but better it comes this season than next. Not ideal that he's joining national team this summer when he has much work to do but also I really like players who have a passion for something other than money. Those guys you can ride with to a championship always, always.
