This is the most telling part of all this...

DeSantis’s comments comes after Florida State Rep. Spencer Roach tweeted that he has met with legislators to discuss repealing the self-governing law in response to Disney’s recent actions.

"Yesterday was the 2nd meeting in a week w/fellow legislators to discuss a repeal of the 1967 Reedy Creek Improvement Act, which allows Disney to act as its own government," Roach tweeted. "If Disney wants to embrace woke ideology, it seems fitting that they should be regulated by Orange County."

Florida is fine with Disney acting as its own government if it wasn't embracing a "woke ideology". That alone seems like a free speech problem and pretty damning evidence of intent if it goes to court. If they had just left it as "Disney shouldn't be able to self govern", that would likely have been much more defendable.

Yeah I think that's far more troubling that Disneyworld is essentially a modern Pullman, WA.. I understand localities frequently give sweetheart deals to lure large businesses to locate their but self-government by a corporation is troubling. It's the kind of stuff we see in Third World countries by multinationals.

In 1967, Florida created that zone because otherwise, it was swampland that was doing nothing. So in the interests of creating jobs and a massive global destination, it gave Disney that ability to act essentially as a local gov't - including fire fighting and policing.

To me, it's not as bad as it sounds. Because if they gave Disney instead say a break on property taxes, it would mean that Orange County tax payers would have to foot the bill for policing millions of tourist that visit every year. You think that's fair?

But also...I think it distract really what is the real issue - that lawmakers are using regulation to strong arming a company into agreeing with their politics. Now that sounds banana republic like.

Here's a quote from one of the gay-hating lawmakers

That's a Florida Lawmaker, Anthony Sabatini.

Certainly sounds like threats being made against a company's right to free speech.

And unlike Trump not being allowed on Twitter, these are actual government actors trying to use their power to silence speech because it doesn't agree with their politics.

I get why Florida allowed Disney to self-govern but I still don't think it's a good idea and as noted is one of the type of things that we see in the Third World. There's been a lot of complaints about PRC based corporations doing things like that and even paranoia about stuff like that possibly happening in the US.

I agree though for FL to take this fight over a cultural issue like this rather than the principle of if a corporation can self-govern itself including with it's own police that are primarily accountable to the corporation. If this is a fight they're going to want to take while they might hurt Disney they might also hurt Central FL's tax base and drive out tourism out of there.

Again the party of economic conservatism and small government is behaving anything but.

So the obvious solution is the government making sure to prevent the scourge of wokeness in private corporations.

Let's be honest you couldn't give two ***** about actual free speech. There is a log history of right wing grifters crying about their free speech being suppressed starting from characters like George Lincoln Rockwell who also b****ed about how his speech was supresssed by liberal colleges.

It seems like you only care about "speech" when it comes from a certain ideological angle.

Fascism is like those chest burster aliens and conservatives are the host. It's not that most conservatives are fascist. It's just the eventual end state of their goals being achieved is fascism.

Their entire shtick about "free market capitalism" has always been in bad faith. They only appreciate the free market if the free market is embedded in a conservative culture. The moment the market doesn't cater towards those conservative ideologies, the fee market is useless and government authoritarianism is always the end state.

I think it’s safe to say any corporation, especially publicly traded ones, are 100% profit driven.

Yes absolutely. And when the free market caters towards LGBTQ folks, the right suddenly turn all stalinist.

I’m glad that my son is actually cool and we are going to Asia this summer instead of Disney World. He has never once even asked about going there.

No offense to people that like that type of vacation but uhhh no thanks.
