I sense he is close to a lock for opening day, but has to show something by May 1 when the rosters go back to normal (13 pitcher maximum.) By that time, we'll have a much better idea of who is performing and who and how many get injured. I doubt he can be optioned to the minors without his consent unless there is a provision in his contract.
Random- but VERY good news nevertheless. Played a huge role in scouting Yordan, Yuli, and many others
Justin Upton designated for assignment, would not mind if the team looked into acquiring him. Looked good so far this spring.
Astros have less margin for error this season than in past years…hopefully we can avoid the injury bug and our star players show out and show up…it’s a long season but our 13 man offensive unit has taken a hit. Fingers crossed, not panicking but it’s hard to ignore that our depth looks more suspect now than it has since around 2015 or so
While this is true, I really believe the 2022 opening day roster is on par with the opening day rosters of 2015-2017 and 2020-2021. 2018 had such a stacked rotation and 2019 was one of the most talented rosters in MLB history. But this roster has about as many questions as most of the other contending teams of the Crane era. And unlike the 2020 and 2021 teams, this year features more financial flexibility and possibly even more tradable prospects.
Just checking out last years opening day active position roster: Starters Altuve 2B - same Brantley LF - same Bregman 3B - same Tucker RF - same Correa SS - gone Alvarez DH - same Gurriel 1B - same Straw CF - gone Malonado C - same Bench McCormick OF - same Robel Garcia IF - gone Castro C - same Diaz IF - same New Pena - SS Siri - OF Goodrum - Utility IF/OF I don't see much difference in depth. Goodrum/Garcia ?
I'm all over Upton if money is reasonable... Meyers being out and Siri unproven does it for me... Not seeing a downside other than some player development taken from younger guys...
At the deadline there could be five serviceable center fielders to sort through. Trading one could be a nice move. Leon Meyers McCormic Siri Brinson
I'm glad he's brought back most of the Luhnow guys. What I don't like is the fact that he hasn't been supplementing Luhnows guys. More especially after letting Correa/Springer walk. It's not just those guys either. It's letting guys like Graveman walk.
They have re-signed Brantley and Verlander as free agents. They've extended Pressley, Altuve, Bregman, Yuli, McCullers and Maldonado.
