Not to go all D&D, but one can’t help but wonder if Will Smith would have done the same if it were, for example, David Spade. I think that’s the part that reflects badly, because it perpetrates the black-on-black stereotype.

But maybe Nook makes the best point and Will Smith would not in a billion years dare to pull that stunt on an Eddie Murphy, so the only takeaway here is Will Smith is just a little b****.

Strange exchange. I am surprised those "me too" folks didnt say anything in real time. Did they really give him a standing ovation a bit later?

I'm just learning about this now, but this seems to me a very interesting aspect, as well.

Smith laughing at first is exactly why I don't think it was staged. If he knew the joke about Jada was coming he would have immediately acted upset about it. Instead he did the standard Hollywood laugh as he was getting roasted then saw her reaction. Probably thought, oh **** I'm going to pay for this later unless I do something.

I think the most upsetting thing about this is that Chris Rock missed a golden opportunity for a knock out punch that would've never been forgotten if he just had the presence of mind to have said immediately after the weak ass slap

"What the hell are you doing Will? She's not gonna **** you bro, she already has a boyfriend"

Missed opportunities like that are the worst.

to those who think it was staged, my question is why? who benefited from that? why would rock go along with it?

will smith came out of this looking even worse than he already did in terms of his mental and emotional state and chris rock came off kind of like a chump.

i only just now heard his oscar speech - jesus christ, that guy is either the biggest narcissist in hollywood or he is straight up mentally unstable and delusional. it was bizarre and pathetic.

I don't think there are any Asian actors that I would personally feel embarrassed. There are certainly actors I like and actors who I think are good people but I'm not going to think that just because they are Asian and / or male they represent me or Asian males in general.

I can enjoy celebrities for their craft or their beauty but in general I don't particularly care what they think about outside of their art and don't identify with them.

It's kind of hard to take something like that back. Chris Rock will now be known as the guy who got slapped
Ain’t nobody understand the words coming out of Jada’s mouth.

Will laughed and then Jada called him a ****ing f*****.

Went on a date with a Nigerian last night. We still made out.

    Rock is a meme now.

And people butt hurt about a joke - if Joe Smith slapped Joe Rock on the street over a joke, Joe Smith would be in jail.

Chris Rock for starters. Also countless of other black comedians who were open about this subject matter and also the clip Tinman posted with Shannon Sharpe wanting to kick Will Smith's ass. on site.

I was one of the ones that thought it was staged because of a few reasons. 1. His wife dragged him a couple of years ago, airing her (and by extension his) dirty laundry on her show. It emasculated him in front of everyone. @TimDuncanDonaut posted to video. Like, if you were agreeable in sitting there and letting your wife make you look like a fool, what's to stop you from trying to go to the other extreme and "defend her" on national TV? 2. Speaking of national TV, Will and everyone else KNEW he was going to win. An incident like this is definitely unprecedented and it would have also been unprecedented to have Will removed from the awards show knowing that he will have to go back up there to accept his Oscar. So why not make it a theatrics of "defending his wife" on national TV which happens to be HIS biggest night, knowing that the chances of you getting removed or punished is pretty low? 3. Rock wouldn't and didn't benefit from this at all but maybe he was trying to help his friend out. Sure getting slapped on national TV and also becoming the meme of the moment is embarrassing but, in the long run, the interest for his stand up shows increases and that goes into more money for him. All of this was yesterday, now fast forward to today....

Yup I think you hit in on the head--he's a huge narcissist AND he's mentally unstable. Before this, before the "entanglement" BS, before his last few movie bombed, Smith was one of (if not THE) biggest Hollywood star. That kind of fame definitely creates a huge ego and said ego needs to be fed...unfortunately his movie choices have sucked in recent memory. Honestly, his last huge blockbuster was probably Men in Black 3 and that was 10 years ago. Between 2012 and now he's either put out duds like After Earth and Bright or had to be part of an ensemble cast (Suicide Squad, Aladdin). Then you add all of the family/wife drama to the mix and the guy just went from being one of the most bankable movie stars in Hollywood history to now being seen as a totally weak man who is fine taking public humiliation from his wife.

I don't think it's staged anymore. I really hope it was because it would have been a convenient exit for all parties involved as I am a fan of both Smith and Rock. Now, you got two grown men, embarrassed by their actions/words in their industry's biggest night on national TV, meme'd to death for probably the next month or so, trying to make sense of why it happened and what's going to happen to their respective careers moving forward.

It was Tim Duncan that posted the video.... dayum.

Red Table talk does not get you the exposure the Oscars would get you to be fair.

He was a double threat, his music wasn't too great but good enough for a couple hits.

    @Jontro Bright was fine.

Rapper, action film star, star of his own TV show, producer, ambassador, comedian and he failed in his role as husband?

I mean that's not bad of a track record.
