I've got it, have Chris Rock host alongside Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson serving as bodyguard and let him go full Ricky Gervais. Ratings gold.
Ehh. It's A thing. I know violence exists no matter how much society has try to civilize itself into believing it can be domesticated out of us. I have more of a philosophical take on it's role in the evolution of the human race but that's too deep for a weak handed slap. lol.
Am I the only one impressed that the Oscars is still able to keep its finger on the cultural pulse after all these years? I mean, Chris Rock...G.I. Jane references...it's really remarkable how such an established institution is able to stay so relevant. An Ishtar mention would've just been chef's kiss.
That was the moment I thought it was scripted as well. Not letting every actor in the audience in on the plan would make it realistic.
I could see the host walking out with a football helmet or some type of headgear. It’ll be easy to write a segment referring back at this. I could see Saturday Night Live this week killing it too.
Rumors are that it had nothing to do with the joke about Jada's hair...apparently back in the green room, Chris Rock took Will Smith's big piece of chicken.
Chris Rock didn't back off or anything when he saw Will approaching. He took it like a man. In fact, I think Chris was laughing while he was being slapped. He had that Chris Rock grin on his face. He was like "WTF is happening...this is too funny".
Some pretty funny comments here, and some pretty lame jokes, too. There is a LOT to unpack with this. A successful, deep marriage is an intimately deep partnership. Probably the closest and most intimate thing you can do in your life. When you add in kids to the mix, it can be transcendent. Those of you who are all about throwing the baby out with the bathwater don't understand this, and you're missing out. It's sort of like having kids and then talking to dog people with no kids. The dog people think they understand loving children, but they barely have a clue because they haven't raised their own kids. A real, working relationship with your spouse (or life partner) can be at another level from that level that some people just don't get. It's someone you are going to die with. You have ties. You make it work. It's possible that Jada cheated, and possible that Will did too. However, they're still together and have made it work. For those of you who can't see past infidelity, do you think being ass raped is the worst thing that can happen in prison? The answer is probably yes. However, prison is worse, you completely lose your freedom, every relationship, are stuck in a hostile building for years. Ass rape is low on your list once faced with those items. So when you have a deep, forever relationship, especially with kids, you work it out if it's possible. It's not a small thing, but taken as a whole of your lives together, it doesn't have to dominate the rest of your relationship, again, especially if there are children involved. It takes a very mature couple to work things out long term and overcome every hurdle life throws at you both. So Will Smith obviously dropped the ball and lost his temper. However, I can relate to this because I've seen my wife deeply hurt by other people and my knee-jerk reaction was to beat their ass (she's stopped me). Nothing in the world can set a man off like his loved ones getting hurt 'intentionally' by someone else. I would say at some level he showed some restraint. He could have decked Chris Rock, but instead he just smacked him. Jada obviously has some deep issues about her hair; any woman does, and for that matter, most guys do. Hair to women is at another level of importance than to men. That's why they are always ****ing with it and trying new things. For Jada to have none due to illness has to be a serious blow to her. Will looked over and saw how hurt she was even if she was covering it up and lost his ****. Add in the reported issues with Chris Rock being a jackass about his wife in the past, and the nervousness and anxiety of the night and occasion, and I understand the reaction. Now, Will Smith could have easily taken the high road here. Personally, given the stakes and setting, I would have stood up, given Rock a stone cold look and waved my hand for no/stop. That's probably message enough for CR to stop. If not, he deserved a smack. As for Chris Rock, I'm 100% convinced that he didn't know about Jada's condition. It's not that rare for black women to shave their heads. And Jada looked very good with no hair. He took that smack like a pro, and I have no doubt that he knew something was coming, because neither of those guys was coddled as a kid and body language speaks volumes. They're all going to come out of this smelling like roses. Chris Rock for standing his ground, taking a hit, being a pro. Will Smith for standing up for his woman. Jada for the poise and 'bravery' she had for coming with an 'illness'.
Depends on if The Rock had the same history with Jada/Will. I think Will Smith would have done the same thing to any man given the exact same situation. Will's no punk.
Maybe it is the white trash in me, but I don't think this slap is a big deal and certainly not worth pressing charges over.
Jada should have done her own slapping, though. That would have pushed the whole "women empowerment" thing to a whole other level. That would have been something. Opportunity missed!
Next year, the actors should come in with canned responses to the jabs by the host where they act like they are heckling the host for his jokes. I could see them doing something like this...to keep it light.
