I think you're right, they don't pay for the ticket but I've read plenty about behind-the-scenes on award shows and they do lobby for being there at the event, being mentioned on television, and for winning the awards they win and that all costs them plenty from what I've heard. Usually paid for by the studios.

Rock's comment wasn't too bad; Oscar jokes are typically tame. Normally if someone doesn't like a joke, they heckle. Will reached his boiling point real quick. It was surprising because it seemed to came out of no where. Chris Rock seemed just stunned at what transpired. Physically Smith is a foot taller. In the back of Smith's mind, he probably knows if he hits Rock, Rock likely wasn't going to hit back; camera was still rolling. Smith's career will survive, but if Hollywood doesn't do it, public will put him in a time out. Smith is going to look back, regret it at least somewhat, this thing overshadowed his night (best actor), and what was supposed to be a picture about the Williams sisters' dad. Both these guys are vets in the industry, thick skin is part of it. Smith lost his cool.
