Because this team's title window is now. They made the WS last year. We are trying to win now. Why else would we pay 39 yr old Verlander?

The players feel nothing except kicking their friends butt next time they see him in a Twins uniform.
Astros gave him a 5 year 160 million dollar contract.
That was fair market for Correa.
Not a single team met his demands after being in a world series...not one team offered 10 years over 340 million.

He is on a last place team now for a year so he can try for the 10 years 400 million contract next season.

Because he and his family can’t make it without that extra $60 million dollars.

Where’s the loyalty in that contract?

You also have to realize that it is against the CBA for the Astros to come out and say they are not interested in Correa. That's considered tampering with a free agent's market. It is entirely possible that the media reports of the Astros making another offer to Correa was just Boras blowing smoke through his media pawns.

And Click and his private equity friends couldn’t possibly live without their extra $60M?

They probably could but 5 years 160 million is a great contract for anyone. Correction….almost anyone.

That's $32M AAV for those of you in Rio Linda. That is NOT low ball.

Stop it with all of these facts. Conjecture is much easier to get mad at.

Did anyone hear if Correa or his representative reached out to the Astros after the lockout? Did anyone even ask?

    Its literally in the article.

Also there was never any reports that the Astros took their original offer off the table. But now reading some of the quotes citing the possible desire to keep payroll lower (unless there's a potential need at the deadline), I wonder what would have happened had they ended up saying "sure, we'll do the 5 year deal..."

    ????
No benefit of the doubt for an owner who's team has gone to 5 ALCS and 3 WS in the last 5 years?
Moves like this you judge two years from now.
    Does Pena pan out?
Do we go after someone at trade deadline?
Do we have ideas of players for next offseason?
Vegas still has us as a top favorite to go to the WS this year....right behind the Dodgers.

It's a good thing Baseball is summer sport. Minnesota winter might be a shock for the Correas.

I saw the Stros at the Target Field in early April in 2018. There was still snow on the ground. Temp at first pitch was 40 degrees. By the 9th it had dropped to the low 30's with windchill about 20. None of the Stros looked happy to be there. I had front row seats on the third base line just behind third base. I had a sign that said "It's 40 degrees here, I miss the Astrodome!" The Stros third base coach saw it and shot me a very dirty look.

Saying that you can only judge this move after 2 years is a cop out in order to take less heat. Astros are in clear win now mode.

the only way this move pays off is if Peña becomes a stud immediately or Correa gets hurt.

If Peña becomes good this year it’ll be by luck so no credit should be given to the front office unless they really really believe in him. Even still, you can’t expect a rookie to immediately contribute like that.

If Correa gets hurt, maybe the Astros FO comes out looking smart, but they offered him 5 years originally anyway. You wouldn’t offer 5 years to someone you’re worried about health wise.

Astros are either trying to win now, or they are not. Cause this move definitely decreases their chances of winning a WS next year. The Astros lost elite offensive production, elite defensive production, AND their leader in the clubhouse. Huge loss.

    Honestly, w
I wouldn't have mind the risk of doing a 1+1. At least this would give us another a year so know if Pena can be that next shortstop for us while being as competitive as possible to win 2022 WS.

A three year contract with an opt out option for each offseason just seems like there's too much downside like you said.

Everything we heard for most of the last three weeks was conjecture by someone without any knowledge. It's just about the only thing "reported" anywhere these days.
