It’s 2.5 of about 20 million that I find unnecessary on payroll (as well as a waste of a roster spot for someone younger with a higher ceiling). Maybe Click is smarter than I’m giving him credit for and he will be a find. I sure don’t see it.
Click is big on versatility. They hope Leon can start in OF, but also backup SS, 3B, and 2B if Pena pans out. My understanding is that they don't think he can get much better in CF. If Leon can play SS and start in OF, it like means they can have another bat on bench.
I see two pitchers, not an extra position player. In fact, it may be a requirement since the reason is to reduce pushing pitchers too fast in a short Spring Training..
Maybe he’s on the Jordan Lyles plan - make it to the majors at age 20, suck for awhile, and then become modestly serviceable. He’s still only 26. Maybe Altuve vouched for him?
I can see 14/14. With the unknowns at SS and CF I think we use more flexibility. 2C Maldy, Castro 6IF Yuli, Altuve, Peña, Goodrum, Diaz, Bregman 5OF Tucker, McCormick, Brantley, Brinson, Siri 1DH Alvarez 6SP Verlander, Valdez, Urquidy, Odorizzi, Garcia, Javier 8RP Pressly, Maton, Neris, James, Montero, Baez, Stanek, Taylor
To be fair, he hasn’t had just a ton of big league at bats yet. I’m not expecting a lot, but you never know. He has potential and is still fairly young, so I’m okay with it. Maybe we’ll get lucky.
First thing Dusty brought up when a reporter told him about 28 man roster for April was bullpen because the starters won't be fully stretched out to start the season. I think they go with 15 pitchers. Altuve 2B Brantley LF Bregman 3B Alvarez DH Yuli 1B Tucker RF McCormick CF Maldonado C Pena SS Bench: Diaz, Castro, Goodwin, Siri/Brinson Rotation: Verlander, Framber, Garcia, Urquidy, Odorizzi Bullpen: Pressly Neris Stanek Maton Montero Baez Javier Taylor Abreu James/Bielak/Solomon/Paredes/Morgan/Rosscup
I get the sense we will start out giving Verlander and Odorizzi the bulk of the IP and Starts. If Valdez follows Urquidy and Odorizzi follows Valdez after an off day, we'll have an idea they will give Garcia and Javier the extra time to build up their workoad. Sort of a Highest IP in the last 3 years approach. Verlander 2019 223 IP 39 Odorizzi 2019 159 IP 31 Urquidy 2021 107 IP 27 Valdez 2021 134.2 IP 28 Garcia 2021 155.1 IP 25 Javier 2021 101.1 IP 24 Getting the data looks like age is more of the factor than IP. Still managing for Optimal October.
wasnt he a top prospect a few years ago? Between him and Brinson I’m guessing Click wants our coaches to take a stab at em…I don’t hate the additions
They are managing all levels at this point, not just MLB. Maybe they are expecting the extra FCL team to happen. I'm also wondering if they might sent Javier back to AAA to be groomed as a starter which is where they think he belongs long term at some point.
Barreto's minor league #'s show some definite potential. He has also had relatively few AB's in the show and missed all of '21 after arm surgery. Brinson's #'s look downright awful anyway you view them. Hard to see him beating out Siri or Goodrum for a spot
Absolutely no harm in minor league deals, I’m honestly more surprised from the players’ side. Both Brinson and Barreto will be nice to have down in AAA, and both still have some upside so you never know. Houston pulled Siri out of nowhere so no reason to doubt them with these kinds of deals.
I have no problem with Siri being good enough, but doubt they'd let him idle on the bench instead of playing every day in AAA. I don't see him here unless we have an OF injury.
Brinson is like Souza last year. Zero chance he makes the roster unless McCormick or Siri get hurt. I don't see the Astros rolling with Goodrum as the backup CF. Siri isn't some young prospect. He's 26 years old and expect him to make the roster barring injury or some unforseen trade.
