ESPN's John Clayton passes away

Always liked him and too bad to hear this.

 

Yeah me too, that was a pretty great commercial, haha. Thought this was cool back story on it:

 

I generally like those ESPN commercials... But the Clayton one has to be the best.

And he was wrong on this prediction, as well. Got let go shortly afterwards.

 

Yeah, he got caught in one of ESPN's cost-cutting employee purges...

Grew up watching this guy almost every day, he was an institution.

Fun story, I actually sat next to him on a plane once as a kid. I was flying 1st class with my dad. Must have been 2000 or 2001 (right before the Texans started). I was 11 I think. Mine and my dad's seats were not together, but my dad ended up sitting next to Barry Melrose and my seat was next to John Clayton. He noticed I was wearing a Rockets shirt and he started asking me about the Texans and what I thought about them. Our biggest debate came with the name of the team, I thought (and still do think) that the "Texans" is a terrible name for a football team. He argued that it was a great name. But pretty exciting for a kid to even discuss that kind of stuff with the Professor lol.

I still don't know if he actually had a ponytail or not all those years, and it blows my mind.

Heard about this over the weekend, sad to hear about his passing. Always enjoyed him as an insider and ESPN personality.....

There’s lots of speculation about your hair, specifically that you have a secret ponytail.
ESPN has this thing called Glowpoint. It’s a camera that’s in my house so that I don’t have to go down to a studio and the company doesn’t have to pay for the satellite. When you see me on camera, it’s the same angle all the time. When Dan Patrick left the network, he started the rumor that I have a ponytail that you can’t see. Obviously I don’t have enough hair on the top of my head to make a ponytail. But if you go on Twitter, it’s a constant question: Do you have a ponytail?

 

I used to watch him and Sean Salibury going at it everyone morning on ESPN. I loved his calm demeanor, yet he was still able to deliver with such confidence that he always own Sean. Sean who tends to get loud and poke fun of John (literally), but John gets the last laugh. He will be missed...

 

RIP, strange bird man.
