2.8 million people in 2 weeks all fleeing and desperate. Most of them prior pulling out as much cash as they can before making the journey.

Even if the war ended tomorrow, for years we are going to hear horror stories of all types. I can only imagine the sex traffickers in Europe and what they are doing that we aren’t yet hearing about.

But yes we certainly seem to be hearing a lot about African students etc having the worst experiences at the moment. It tells us the story of two Europes:

-One in an up and coming thriving European city that has ample opportunities and unique experiences for all types
-Another that is holding onto the divisions and hatred that have fueled tribal and nationalistic conflicts for millennia.

The longer this conflict continues the more we are going to see a repeat of our worst history.

Belarusians are sons of b****es. Watched this vid because the creator was great explaining the Ukraine conflict (start at 6 min mark)

So Poland was a "border state" of sorts in last year's immigrant flood. They naturally toughened up.

Doesn't excuse things, but it partially explains it.

The year I was working in Germany, it was the brunt of ISIS and the Syrian refugee crisis gripping Europe.

Merkel was the first and foremost to welcome them and I even went to the train station from time to time to see them arrive. At the time, there were a good number of college aged folks that formed as a welcome party. This was all during the constant debates of what defined "Germaness", which was the result of frustration against immigrants from decades ago mooching and abusing the welfare state without any drive for integration.

So there are people who look beyond color.

It's just that once all the cameras and good feelings fade, racial and cultural differences are still there. The refugee camps Germany propped up became fully segregated from the rest of the nation. Carpenters couldn't go out and get a carpentry job. They had to be processed and filtered into a bureaucracy that didn't expect or consider their existence.

And this is a country these refugees want to eventually land into.

I guess the point of this is if you want or expect authorities to see beyond race, how willing and how long are you going to see it through? Once those camps start winding down (which some voters would rather keep in perpetuity), are you willing to welcome 2-5 families into your neighborhood? Like truly look after them as the government sure as hell won't. If they get involved, you know either nothing will change or get ridiculously worse.

It's a hidden and real cost that bigots are more upfront in answering.

This isn’t a surprise to anyone that has spent much time in Europe or is familiar with wider European history… especially the farther East you go.

The Slavs are not exactly the most tolerant people of non Europeans. Places like Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Belarus and to a lesser extent Germany are far more ethnocentric.

I brought this up in the Ukraine thread but the Polish government has been one of the more anti-refugee governments up until Ukraine. Even now I'm not surprised they are still treating refugees differently.

Poland is largely slipping under the radar because there are other larger problems in countries bordering Poland..... but it is a country with a growing and strong far right nationalist bend and the leader of Poland has said some odd things. For example, he said requiring Poland to take any refugees goes against the idea of sovereignty and that it goes against the Polish identity.... and he further said that the concern of Poland is to get the Poles in the UK to move back to Poland........ So it is a state that is headed towards nationalism, and based on it's history, it isn't entirely shocking.... their leadership has also moved towards pursuing reparations from Germany from WWII, from having concentration camps in Poland labeled "Polish concentration camps"...... and there have been calls to have increased military spending..... not to mention that there have been racist attacks.

I get that Europe is not used to taking in the immigrant numbers that the USA has over the last 200 years, but perhaps it would be better if immigrants didn't go to Poland at this point, I don't think it will end well.

I know the USA has issues like everyone else, but I wish that we would take more of the refugees from places like Syria, Ukraine etc. I know there are geo-political concerns, but I wish we had taken more Chinese as well.... I think it is good for the USA and a better understanding of the world.
