ide rather go with the player with alot of playoff experience. Fisher would complement Yao and Tmac better too. Like he did for Kobe and Shaq.
Ditto BUT SUBTRACT: Carlos Arroyo (because Jazz players scare me) and Robert Horry because I don't think he's worth the full MLE either at this stage in his career. AND ADD: Bruce Bowen and Trenton Hassell.
All the people voting for Fisher should check out the other Fisher thread. He shot 29% from 3pt and 35% overall. Not good. I was also disappointed in his assist numbers (not just this year, but always.- career avg about 3apg) I know he was in the triangle, etc. so his assist numbers might be deflated because of that, but what evidence is there that he will adapt?
Please don't make me root for Derek Fisher by getting him on the Rockets. He makes Kenny Smith look like Iverson. That dude is terrible. And his shot is ugly. Stupid headband, not a good passer. Please no!!!!
Mehmet Okur, definitely. We need a rebounding/defending 4 who can put in some minutes at the 5 behind Yao. My 100th post, after 5 years on the BBS, LOL. I guess I don't post that much...
If the trade goes down, the team is a little too soft for my liking, so I would go after some hard nosed Van Gundy-type players with the MLE. The Rockets are losing Cat’s defense, Steve’s heart, and Cato’s toughness. They need to find some players that have those qualities. The current team would get bullied and pushed around by the likes of Detroit and San Antonio. Barry is clearly the most talented offensive player available, but I think the Rockets offense is pretty much set. Mcgrady should give 25ppg, Yao hopefully will average 20ppg, JJ adds another 10ppg, and the combo of Howard/Taylor should easily be able to produce 20ppg. I would split the MLE and sign Bobby Sura and Mark Blount or Brian Skinner. This gives the Rockets a tough defensive-minded point guard and a blue collar big man to backup Yao. If possible, I would also like the Rockets to go after Eric Williams.
There are two main guys I'd like to add this offseason: Kenyon Martin and Steve Nash. (There are others, but those are the best two I think we have a reasonable shot at.) Nash will be looking for a big deal and may still resign with the Mavs -- especially if they can swing a trade for Shaq -- but if we land McGrady, we might be appealing enough to get him with the MLE. Then we use the TE to get a 4. Or we use the MLE on a lesser 4 like Stromile Swift and try to land a top 1 with the TE. My ideal lineup for next year: Center: Yao, Howard, whoever Power Forward: Martin, Howard, whoever Small Forward: Nachbar, Jackson Shooting Guard: McGrady, Jackson Point Guard: Nash, Gaines, whoever Well, I'm dreaming, but it's a reasonable dream....
no, it's not. Martin is wants the max- which he's definitely not worth. Nash would most likely be involved if Dallas trades for Shaq. Even if he's not, there's no way he's signing for the MLE.
Probably Derek Fisher. To be honest, the money would be better spent on Stromile Swift, and then see what we could get for Juwan Howard (backup center? small forward?) And then I remember we would have no PG. Hmn. Yep, Derek Fisher. This point is probably moot anyway, as Derek Fisher is probably our target anyway. A point guard who plays decent D (see: flopper; see also, Divac, Vlade and Stockton, John) and would know to throw the ball to the REALLY BIG GUY UNDER THE BASKET).
Juwan Howard's new nickname..... Albatross. We're not getting anything for him with that contract. It's Glen Rice II!
Doesn't Howard make less per season than Mo Taylor? And doesn't he have similar, if not better, numbers?
Howard is about $2 MIL per season cheaper. They are comparable rebounders (although Howard is slightly better). Howard is a much better passer and overall, a moderately better scorer. The starting PF job would be his to lose IMO, unless we bring in a healthy McDyess.
And I use this term "loosely" but Howard is more athletic than Taylor. I agree with codell, I see Howard as the starter over Taylor if they are both here this upcoming season. Since both of their games are similar I wouldnt be surprised if they looked to trade one of them for either a good shooter or a rugged rebounder. Maybe Taylor for Croshere talks can come back up again.
Peeler opts out. Is is a candidate for the Rox backcourt? From espn.com. I don't know what he might cost, but he seems like a good sniper from beyond the arc and I recall he was athletic and JVG could turn him into a good defender. I wouldn't mind picking him up, but prefer Fisher and then Barry. But a good cheapie pickup if he won't cost much. Associated Press SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Sacramento Kings guard Anthony Peeler declined to exercise his contract option for next season Wednesday, making him a free agent on July 1. Peeler averaged 5.7 points and 2.0 rebounds as a backup guard in his first season with Sacramento. The 12-year veteran led the NBA in 3-point percentage, shooting 48.2 percent (68-for-141). "I think that it gives him a chance to control his own destiny and look over all the opportunities that are out there," said Geoff Petrie, the Kings' president of basketball operations. "I think he liked it here very much and is not averse to coming back."
Jebus: "Martin is wants the max- which he's definitely not worth. Nash would most likely be involved if Dallas trades for Shaq. Even if he's not, there's no way he's signing for the MLE. You may be right; however if there's a S&T for Nash, I would not expect it to be with LA for Shaq. Why would either party do that? Nash is too old to make LA want him -- they'll need to rebuild for the future. And why would Nash go to LA for a few years. If all he want is the max, maybe, but I think he's as likely to take less and play for a ring. Martin may not be worth the max, but who is among players we might get? There aren't that many 4s we can get, and we desperately need one. Sure, I'd prefer Jermaine O'Neal or Okafor, but we're not getting either of them. We have a shot at Martin. Same goes for 1s. Which ones would we want that we have a shot at? Fisher's not much better than Lue. Barry's more of a 2. I'd rather make a play for Nash. Maybe we can't get both, but we can surely get one, and who knows? The other might take less money to play with the other if Yao and McGrady were there, too. I like those options a lot better than Skinner and Fisher.
If we gave Martin the max, which I think is what you're suggesting, How exactly do you figure we can afford to keep Yao and McGrady? Even the Lakers only have two max contract players.
It's possible that both Barry and Fisher are going for multi-year contracts because of the age issue; they probably want a little security. I definately think Barry is looking for a multi-year deal. We'd be lucky to have either of them for the MLE.
