Not sure anyone is supposed to "care" about what these bozos think. I just listen to this sometimes in traffic and when a Rockets related person gets ranked it's fun to see where they end up versus my own opinions. One of the aspects of this podcast that I like is that they verbalize their logic and debate each other. If it was just a list of opinions that would be pointless. Or if it was just high volume shock value (ahem, ESPN) that would also be pointless. They talk through their reasoning and they are willing to rethink their points as they debate with each other (they do multiple times in this exact episode). I do realize for some crazies on Clutchfans a version of the human experience where one "listens" and "evolves" their stance is unfathomable. Inconceivable. Preposterous. To be fair their "analysis" of Silas is also pretty flimsy and just throwaway stuff. They tailed off on interesting dialogue by the last 2 coaches. I don't think Hollinger is a moron just because of the Grizzlies stint though. Wayne Gretzky once coached the Phoenix Coyotes for a few seasons and ended with a sub .500 record. Doesn't mean all of his opinions on hockey are trash. Now Scottie Pippen on the other hand...
It's a shame too, because he's a likeable guy, you know at least a portion of it is because of external circumstances (the whole Harden & Morey breakup thing), and this will probably torpedo his career. But ... such is life when you sign up for your dream job and realize your boss is Tilman Fertitta. EDIT: I think maybe he is just too timid and type-B for the NBA. Maybe college would be more his speed.
I would argue that the rest of the league is catching up more than that he's aging. Pop was way ahead of the game (on and off the court). He was managing minutes on a modern level and giving Tim Duncan "DNP - old"s years before guys like LeBron and Durant started giving those to themselves, and at a time when people shouted at him for it. Practically speaking, everybody else catching up amounts to the same thing as you falling behind, but we should know that the latter is not what's really happening. In any case, Pop is still the GOAT coach, even if he might not be the best in the game today.
rest of the league isn’t catching up with Pop, he just doesn’t have much talent to work with if your best player by far is Dejaunte Murray, your team sucks give him talent and he’d coach circles around 99% of the league Rick Carlisle is highly respected, and look at the Pacers. They’re trash. Steve Nash is a Tier 3 coach for them only because he’s been able to coach KD, Kyrie, and previously Harden. He is not any better than Silas who they have at Tier 6… talent matters if Silas had been coaching a prime, healthy, and engaged James Harden this whole time instead of this roster, he’d be on his way to being a 2x playoff coach, and even if he had his flaws, he wouldn’t be viewed as a bottom of the barrel coach, and that’s facts Steve Nash literally on the sidelines to clap and project good vibes, but he’s 3 tiers above Silas…ha last year, he had Ime Udoka and MDA as assistants handling both the offense and defense…Steve Nash just clapped and subbed out the role players
silas got em right where he wanted. underestimate him until next year when he switches hof coach mode on and takes rox deep into the play-in
I think the smart thing to do is properly thank him at the end of the year, draft Chet. Promote Will Weaver to see what we got with him next year. And then you make decisions. Silas definitely is not the guy that puts your talent a level above their potential which is the thing championship coaches do.
Can't believe they're disrespecting the man solely responsible for the development of LeBron James, Steph Curry and Luka Doncic like that.
Honestly, the criticism of Silas, especially by Hollinger is pretty well on point. They are not at every practice and they do not work with him on a day by day basis but the reality is that the Rockets on offense and defense look lost and undisciplined. Silas would be a far better coach if he had a veteran team. His strength seems to be handling egos and keeping everyone on the same page. Now, he also has been dealt a nasty hand. He has veterans that largely don't want to play for the Rockets and a bunch of young players and two malcontents in Porter and Wood. Still, at this point there should be some obvious discipline or structure at this point. With the emergence of Green, my guess is that Silas gets another shot next year.
Every time I look at Silas I look at what is going on in OKC. Compare Silas to Daigneault. OKC has a trash roster and somehow that coach gets that team to play defense and get wins. Even without SGA. Silas does get another year most likely but he should be on notice. If I was the Rockets I would be taking a HARD LOOK at Kenny Atkinson. He has been well regarded at developing young players. And that is what this franchise needs now. Young player development and big boosts in the scouting department.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO............ ....OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO................... .............OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WTF Thibodeau tier 5 and Frank Vogel tier 2? Main stream media really like sucking LA balls. McMillan and Bickerstaff really underrated putting them in tier 4. How the hell is Popovich in tier 3?
Same here. Most of Thunder roster is very young and most of them not that talented but you can see they bust their ass on every play. With the rockets, they look like they care in only 1/10 games or so.
Agreed! They might as well be ranked by Talent Silas has probably the LEAST talented team . . .most definitely the team with the Least Experience Rocket River
