Is that a more eye-catching title HEB?

    http://detnews.com/2001/pistons/0107/06/h01-244210.htm

Webber has contacted three teams so far: the Pistons, Sacramento and Indiana.
Dumars, though, said he expected Webber to give the Pistons the first visit.
The likes of New York, Orlando, Houston and San Antonio are believed to be off Webber's list at this point, but that could change.

Doesn't sound to me like we're still after him. Detroit already has him coming to their kitchen.

Also interesting that they don't expect Rodney White to give Williamson a run for the starting position. Could be just a lot of spin.

The only reason he is talking with the Pistons, is so he won't look like a jerk in his hometown. Thats it. He isn't going to Detroit.

Actually, gater, Corliss Williamson's agent doesn't think White will give him a run for the starting position because of Corliss' experience (which is odd because Corliss got bumped in toronto for a rook). Dumars and the Pistons have said they expect White to start and score in high double figures off the bat. Detroit wants Corliss back as offense off the bench and as an option in the post.

Webber is already in Detroit, so it isn't that special that he'd visit there first. BUT, the respect he has for Joe Dumars and Isiah Thomas should not be dismissed. They are huge in his eyes and make Detroit or Indiana very likely destinations if he leaves Sacto.

    Love the title NIKE! [IMG]

When you're crossing things off of a list, isn't the general trend to eliminate choices? Why would the reporter write 'that could change'?

And why did the reporter forget that the Wizards were on the list yesterday? Sounds like a lot of conjecture by the reporter. Fill in the blanks for plausibility (omit the Wizards) and make the assumption that every team that Webber hasn't contacted is off of 'the list'.

To be honest, I don't care anymore. If Webber goes East and DRob leaves the Spurs (yeah right) the Rockets should be sitting pretty this year.

Hmmm, looks to me that we're off of Webber's list because HE is off of OURS! [IMG] And I don't think White will challenge Williamson for the starting job, White isn't ready for the NBA yet.

Detroit wants the guy with the nickname of "Scoreless" to provide offense off their bench?

Maybe someone gave him that nickname, but it doesn't describe how he plays. He's a good offensive player, especially off the bench where he can be used when the matchups are to the best advantage.

Check his numbers, he can score when given any minutes. He was very effective for Detroit when he was there and for Sacto when he was there. He isn't a starter because he is a tweener, but he can be a very good 6th man in the NBA if he's willing to take that role.

I think Corliss would be better off the bench, I think he would have a very good NBA career if he did that. Guys want to start badly just to get attention, but freaking Kevin McHale is a Hall-of-Famer coming off the bench! Corliss Williamson is a very good scorer.

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) -- Chris Webber, one of the NBA's most sought-after free agents this summer, met with Detroit Pistons president Joe Dumars for two hours Friday.

"I told him how much we want him in a Pistons' uniform next season," Dumars said in a statement, adding they will talk again next week.

In an interview with The Sacramento Bee early in the week, Webber, who led Michigan to consecutive NCAA championship games, said he will take his time deciding where he wants to play.

Webber told the newspaper he has been contacted by 12 to 15 teams since July 1 and has no idea where he will play next season.

The Sacramento Kings, who Webber played for last season, will offer him a contract worth more than $120 million over seven years -- the largest possible deal under the NBA's salary cap.

Only a handful of teams can offer Webber anything close to that amount, and at least two of them -- the Houston Rockets and Chicago Bulls -- appear to be out of the running because of the moves they made on draft day.

The Orlando Magic have cleared salary-cap space, but they may not have enough to entice Webber. Orlando is directing its recruiting efforts at Toronto center Antonio Davis.

Detroit, Indiana, Miami and the New York Knicks also are known to be interested in Webber.

"I had a very good meeting with Chris Webber," Dumars said. "I consider the meeting a very positive step in attempting have Chris play basketball in Detroit for the Pistons."

Just to add, I made some inquires yesterday and today with friends who have some knowledge of the situation and they confirmed that Webber was not currently on the Rockets list of additions in the offseason. Those I spoke to said they doubted he would be because the Rockets are indeed focused on signing their own players before they do anything else.

Jeff, I hope to God your friends are right. Webber is no good for us. i'd only do it if we could keep SA Mooch and Bull but otherwise screw him, let some dumbass team offer him the max and get screwed over a la Larry Johnson or Juwan Howard. Unless he goes to a team already poised for greatness, he is not going to win crap. He'll never make it out of the west and with AI and other easterners on the rise,he'll probably never make it out of there either.
    Good Riddance!

Mr. President. No man thinks more highly than I of three legged cows. They deserve to live. On my own part, I consider it as nothing less than a question of reason. Cows with three legs are good. We are apt to shut our eyes against a painful truth : three-legged cows are better. They are better because the meat on them is better. The steaks are more tender. Three-legged cows tend not to wander as much. These cows could be the symbol of our country. The world would look upon us with great respect. They will want our cows and pay good money for them. The cows could symbolize freedom and hard work and three legs are better than four. They are meant for us; they can be meant for no other.

Drewdog, if you are tired of Webber debate I suggest you not read threads obviously referring to the situation. Freedom man, use it!

Likewise, you have the freedom to post anytime, but hopefully you can exercize that brain of yours and spare us next time before you post like that.

Great news, if it is true. Personally, I don't believe anything Webber or his people say.

In any event, I hope we sign our own guys instead of mortgaging the future for Webber.

I think the Pippen debacle taught the Rockets a good lesson.

I agree that Webber is off our list....but does anyone else remember the national media saying, Houston has backed off of the Randy Johnson hunt the very day we made the trade for him. He was listed as going to Cleveland or other spots...but Houston was no longer considered to be a player. huh

Exactly, RM. It sure sounds a lot better to your own current FAs to say you really weren't interested in the other guy but were just being polite. It further makes it a more believable line because we had such a good draft day. But drafting the best rookie 3 out there in no real way impacts wanting to acquire the best 4/5 available via FA this year or the next, and further happens to be such a guy who wants to change cities.

Bingo, I don't mind if you present a reasonable case that we should not pursue Webber, but your comment makes me think you do not actually watch professional basketball. Because if you did you would know that Shaq, Duncan, Garnett and Webber make up BY FAR the four best 4 or 5s in the game over the previous couple of years. You would also know that the last 2 on this list would have a legitimate claim to not only being the 2nd best 4s playing (behind TD), but being the 3rd best player in the league over the last 2 years.

If all you care in your evaluation of a player is whether he won a championship, well there goes Malone or Barkley in their prime as valuable players as well as that "I have never won a single playoff series in my life guy" in KG. I personally would not mind the former guys a few years ago or KG-despite his zero playoff success. Just like I wouldn't mind having Webber, and he is (or maybe "was" a whole lot more realistic than trying to wait for Duncan, KG or Shaq becoming available and taking less money to come play for us.

BTW, that statement of 'off the list' is apparently a bunch of conjecture. Webber supposedly got in touch with San Antonio this weekend.

It just looks as if this guy is taking his own sweet time. The friggin' Kings just got 'in touch' with him this past weekend.

Assuming the story is true and Webber has taken Houston off his list, my question is why?

And what can Houston do to put themselves back on the list, whether the Rockets sign him or not. It does not bode well for the future if Houston becomes looked upon as a third world country by legitimate all-stars.
