With the CBT threshold expected to be $230M+, it would not surprise me at all if Houston signed a significant free agent. Correa, Bryant, Conforto, or Story would be the most likely imho, in that order. Twitterverse saying a deal is expected today and that free agency would begin tonight.
Astros should have somewhere between $20M and $40M to spend under the CBT, depending on how much they want to hold back for the deadline. Regardless, it’s clear that they can afford to add a major free agent, at least from a competitive balance tax perspective.
Probably closer to 20-25 million if they want to stay under and leave room at the deadline. They were estimated at around 191 but that was with arbitration estimates so the actual numbers after the hearings could move that up or down. Add a couple million for minimum salary raises, potentially 6-7 million for Odorizzi and Yuli incentives, and you are knocking on 200 million already. So depends how much room they want at the deadline. Should be a crazy couple weeks.
If the Astros go on the cheaper end, Joc Pederson, Eddie Rosario, and Alex Dickerson make some sense as inexpensive OF who hit lefthanded. With Meyers' injury status unknown that may be the area they can deepen the lineup without breaking the bank. Although I'd prefer a bigger splash like Conforto or Bryant. Jake Diekman and Andrew Chafin make some sense as late-inning lefty relievers, although I still see Houston's bullpen as full.
It is only postponed. I expect Evan already has articles queued up on service time manipulation and young players getting paid almost nothing.
Conforto feels like the most "Astro" like move. He's coming off a down year so he won't get the mega contract. He can play RF this year and Tucker can move to CF and they both can give Brantley rest days in LF to get McCormick/Siri/Meyers playing time in CF. Also you can do a lot of late inning defensive replacements to give Brantley more rest. Then in 2023 you have Tucker in left, Conforto in RF, and Leon/Meyers/McCormick/Siri fighting for CF.
They should have way more than that with a payroll under 170 mil. If Crane’s statement that they’ll be a top payroll team this season is true.
They are estimated at 193 mil for luxury tax purposes on fangraphs right now. That doesn't include incentives for Odorizzi and Yuli that could be up to 6-7 million total. That also doesn't include actual arbitration numbers only estimates. https://www.fangraphs.com/roster-resource/payroll/astros
