am I missing something, I don't see where Congress has passed anything. the linked article says they are just starting to think about it. Nothing in the Post or Times either
Wheat exports are central to the Ukrainian economy. I wouldn't be shocked if Putin uses some form of napalm to burn out all of the wheat fields just as a terrorist tactic, and psychological warfare. It's also a way to where if he loses Ukraine loses too in its rebuild as a successful part of the EU. Also in terms of the US, I don't know how long it'll take to do so, but there's certainly a need for farm states to up their production of wheat. Right now is the beginning of the planting season for next year. Now is the time to avoid a catastrophe of skyrocketing wheat prices next year. Hopefully the secretary of ag is moving mountains to make up for the loss of supply that'll be kept off the global trading market in the next 2 years.
No. I was noting the inconsistency in their their strategy, the hysterical level of outrage, and their supposed objectives. It would be stupid to embargo Russian oil. One of two things needs to happen. Either: The North Atlantic globalist elites need to push this and us to go all in, with embargoes, troops, no fly zones and the full front massive war that this would initiate, with the goal of squashing Russia into geopolitical submission and irrelevance, or Cooler heads need to prevail, focusing on a realistic evaluation of how we can get out this mess and what can actually be achieved, without the emotionalism, the media led mob style tactics, or the prioritization of retribution, retaliation, vengeance and vendetta removed from the equation. Clearly the answer here is the second one. However, for that to happen, the North Atlantic globalist elites will have to accept that we live in a multi-polar world, and not a uni-polar world, with them dictating rules to everyone else, which they themselves of course do not respect or adhere to. That would require a level of maturity, humility, leadership and self awareness that these people clearly have shown no indication of possessing. So because of THAT, we appear to be stuck in this dysfunction pattern, with no clear, realistic way out. We need to be trying to calm this situation down, not doubling down to ratchet it up, as we collectively have been. Unless we are willing to go all the way and go to war over, that is, which clearly we are not.
I hope and expect there's no need for government to do anything special. Farmers can see as well as we can that volatility is going to drive up prices and they should plant as much as they can to take advantage of that market signal. (But, it's not my industry, so take that with a grain of wheat).
Snowden is a patriot? That gave the information to Russia? How does that jibe? I am sympathetic to Snowden wanting to get that info out but I can't get past the fact that he ran right to Russia which nullifies anything he did by going to a country that is 100 times worse.
Given that Biden has been pretty clear we're not sending troops, doing no fly zones, or otherwise launching a full-front massive war, I think he's pursuing #2. But that path does not have in include the surrender you suppose. Some compromise to Russian demands would be necessary to have peace, but how much is relative to our bargaining strength. Russia wants to capture as much territory as possible to improve their hand; we want to inflict as much economic damage as possible to improve ours. Doing that might include an oil embargo. Is it a good idea? I don't know. But your position is literally to hope that whatever we do is the wrong thing and we be defeated and chastened in the end. But even if we were to draw back from our imperialist ways, it's not like the world can then live in harmony. Power abhors a vacuum, and wherever we withdraw the dictators of Russia, China, and others will advance.
This is the part that frustrates me to no end about anti-American interventionists. They live in this weird space where the world would be more peaceful and prosperous without American intervention and everyone would get along.
