    analysis:

Biden offers sentimental hogwash against Putin — and doesn’t even suggest we’ll win

    https://nypost.com/2022/02/24/biden-offers-frail-hogwash-against-putin-doesnt-inspire-victory/

    excerpt:

The word “inspiring” does not come to mind as a way of describing President Biden’s afternoon speech following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. “Dispiriting” comes closer.

The best Biden could do rhetorically was to declare that “America stands up to bullies” — as though the most dangerous moment in the past 20 years on the planet Earth were some kind of remake of the old movie “My Bodyguard.”

Come on, man. Putin isn’t a bully. He’s either a lunatic pursuing a nation-murdering delusion or a man possessed of a world-historical ambition to make himself an equal in Russian history to the Greats, Peter and Catherine, and Lenin and Stalin. Meanwhile, Biden thinks the country he leads is Adam Baldwin protecting poor Chris Makepeace against goonish Matt Dillon.

Does this seem unfair? The “bullies” line is the only thing anyone is going to remember from Biden’s remarks. The portrait he painted of the era that Putin’s aggression is creating featured a curiously passive vision of the United States and its role in the future.

In Biden’s telling, it won’t be the US or NATO that will reverse this world-changing infamy. No, somehow it will happen because of … history.

“When the history of this era is written, Putin’s choice to make a totally unjustifiable war on Ukraine will have left Russia weaker and the rest of the world stronger,” he said. “Liberty, democracy, human dignity. These are the forces far more powerful than fear and oppression.”

That is ludicrous and sentimental hogwash, as it suggests somehow that the anti-Putin cause will prevail because he’s against good things and will be punished for it.

Biden lets European leaders take center stage on Ukraine
The president’s decision to cede the spotlight at times in punishing Russia carries strategic advantages but political risks.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/03/01/biden-europeans-leadership-russia-ukraine/

    excerpt:

White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Biden deserved credit for many of the penalties being imposed on Russia — even if he wasn’t the one making the announcements.

“All of this coordinated action did not happen by accident. It wouldn’t have happened without the president’s efforts,” she said. “The order of announcements and how that has gone — I would not over-read into that, because we would not be here had the president not been leading this effort around the world for months.”

I think Biden has been a pretty crummy domestic President, but there is no denying that he's handled the Ukraine conflict well. There was a great article this morning interviewing a myriad of European leaders saying that Biden and his staff have been working for about 3 months warning about Putin, freely sharing intelligence, and putting together plans.

It was his work behind the scenes that led to the spectacular turn in Europe against Russia. Most of the punishing sanctions and responses were decided weeks ago, for the most part, and it is no accident how quickly Europe galvanized. Its not just he press secretary saying this, people in Europe are saying it as well. A week ago, there was 0 will amongst Europe to do anything to prevent invasion, because a lot of countries didn't think it would actually happen, especially at this scale. When they did invade, it triggered the diplomacy that Biden's been working on for months.

No matter the outcome, it leaves a united Europe to deal with Russia, with US financial and military support as a backbone. As Europe coalesces and takes up their own defense, rather than always relying on the US like they've done for decades, it'll allow the US to focus almost entirely on China. If it works out, a "joined at the hip" NATO and Europe will handle Russia and perhaps even the Middle East, while the US can put its economic, diplomatic, and military might to push back against Chinese ascension. Putin's move against Ukraine may actually be the biggest cluster possible for both Russia and China.

So far, Biden has done a great job in terms of uniting western world and rally against Russian evil empire, without using military forces. I give him A- for efforts. Much better than Afghan episode.

I will vote for him again if it is him vs Trump again. It is probably true that Putin wouldn’t have start the war if Trump was still the president, because he would have made a deal with Putin and sold Ukraine for a couple hundred million of his family business.

It's not the notion that the writer could do better, but rather stoking frustration/animus that the president should do better.

At some point, we all go the way of Rome...

Gas prices will drag him down again.

I feel like people are willing to dig deep and sacrifice a little more to help Ukraine.

Biden's approval rating jumps to 47 percent after State of the Union address

    https://thehill.com/homenews/admini...o-47-percent-after-state-of-the-union-address

    excerpt:

The latest NPR-PBS NewsHour-Marist National Poll found that 47 percent of Americans surveyed approve of the job he is doing as president, which is a jump from the 39 percent approval rating he had in the same poll last month.

“This is an unusual bounce,” Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist Institute for Public Opinion, said in a statement. “It gets him back to where he was pre-Afghanistan.”

Only fools will blame Biden for gas prices. The Billionaires in the oil industry will squeeze out as much profit as they can to keep living like Kings. The Republicans will blame Biden as they pocket those huge donations from the guys driving up their prices.

That's a terrible and unfair analogy -- herpes can strike politicians of any affiliation, whereas Os only afflicts the Dems. :D

I'm not for putting most people I genuinely disagree with on ignore, only a couple people who don't contribute anything at all here. Os is annoying at times but does bring a lot to the table when he's not trolling. I can't say the same for Trader or Mojo...

    I thought it was a decent analogy...lol.
