What are you listing exactly? Silverchair's sound REALLY changed after that first or second album. I thought it was pretty interesting actually. Lots of orchestra stuff and layers going on.
i love janes more than PJ or STP, but janes was way different than those two. this thread is more of a true apples-to-apples comparison and it shows in the polling, which is neck-and-neck. and to me it's STP by ten miles! pearl jam was never really a "grunge" band but they got lumped into that b/c of the seattle connection. and i always thought core-era STP drew their influence from alice in chains and soundgarden as much as pearl jam. and by their 2nd album they had already shifted away from the early 90's grunge sound. i see people mentioning helmet - one of those dudes was in a band before them that i really liked called "band of susans" - 3 guitar wall of sound - if you like sonic youth then you should definitely check them out...they were like a more aggressive/americanized/rock-out version of british shoegaze.
Alice in Chains is the best out of them, IMO. I still listen to them regularly, especially Jar of Flies. Something about that album. Stupid heroin, indeed. Blind Melon was on the cusp of becoming one of the great jam bands. Sublime maybe wouldn't have had staying power but the albums he put out were all fantastic. I refuse to see or listen to these bands (STP included) with their current lineups. I don't care what you do, you can't replace those voices. As far as PJ vs STP, I liked them both a lot but "Ten" was an absolute game changer. I didn't really continue listening to both as they went on though I like some of what they did in the later years. I was at that Lollapalloza, too. My idiot friends wanted to leave early when all I really wanted to see that day was RHCP. I think we watched Ministry from the parking lot and then left. At least I got to see PJ.
when it comes to STP i tend to stick to the hits and stuff i heard on the radio, but i put on core for the first time in years and its a very good record, especially considering its their debut. it definitely stirs up a lot of memories b/c i listened to the this one a lot in 1993-94. not a radio hit, but this might be my favorite song on the album - i love the chorus and the bridge. its f***ing great. weiland was so good on this one.
I was listing grunge bands that I liked ........ until I couldn't think of anymore good ones and listed Puddle of Mudd. I liked Silverchair a lot.
seaweed, dino jr, pavement and swervedriver... this thread has taken an unexpected turn and i like it. i saw all those bands many times. did anyone else see pavement with sonic youth and painteens at the unicorn in fall 1992 (or was it 1991?). great show.
