Not a clue what that means. I grew up with rap. Again, started with the originals. Loved most of it. Even Public Enemy was bad ass. But NWA and this other Gangsta rap about just being thugs? Never liked it, and I still don't. Hell, even Eazy E manned up and left. I thought they'd have matured by now in their late 40's/50's, but no. Still the same thug life with twerking and prison garb. We should never hold that up to a level kids aspire to be.

yeah same, gangster rap was just teen angst, looking back at it and listening to it now is kinda cringe. The beats are cool though. The thing I appreciate with new hip hop is with festivals like Loud or Coachella, the performances just looks modern. Last night, the whole time I’m thinking, they old. With the energy of a senior citizen lmao.

It was just nice to finally have a halftime show that was not one of the following:

    • A washed up artist from the 70s/80s
    • A combo act trying to appease every single human on Earth
    • A hyper-novel pop star whom only people under 35 even recognize
    • A bland-as-hell day-time radio yuppie rock act

Solid show. Prince, MJ, Stones and a couple others still better.

Most the people that listened to Nirvana don't have an issue with hip hop.

Could've used less Kendrick Lamar time and more Eminem time.

You cannot get any more main stream that Dr. Dre/Snoop Dog/Eminem in 2022... they are perfect for a Super Bowl halftime show.

Dr. Dre has only released three albums and has sold 18 million copies.

Eminem has sold 210 million albums, he is the 4th best selling recording artist ever.

Snoop Dog has sold 40 million albums.

The producer was Jay Z, he has sold over 50 million albums.

These are very mainstream performers that are now middle aged. There really shouldn't be any controversy with them performing, especially in LA where they were connected to.

I feel you bro but let’s not forget they couldn’t sell tickets at their Houston show during the up in smoke tour. Not sure how the economy was back then or Houston didn’t really care or the tickets were expensive? Do you guys remember the venue? Was it at the compaq center?

Can anyone else come up with realistic options for super bowl half time shows that you would actually be excited about?

That was probably the best they could do this year. I don't even particularly love any of those rappers, but there 10 times better than any of the more recent hip-hop artists. And the ones from the past that are better probably wouldn't be popular enough.

The best future half time show I could think of would be Pearl Jam, but I'm not even really sure how realistic that is. They're basically one of the few good surviving rock band from the 90s that may be popular enough for a halftime show. Or, if you really want to be awesome, have a grunge tribute with Eddie Vedder/Dave Grohl/Jerry Cantrell/Mark Lanegan taking over vocals for the Big 4 original Seattle grunge bands with all surviving members participating and performing a song from each respective band. That would be awesome. Too bad Seattle isn't an option to host a Super Bowl. That would be perfect.

Unfortunately we're most likely to get vapid pop/hip-hop artists going forward that will have no lasting influence.

I'm not a huge fan of their post-90s stuff, but Foo Fighters seem like another likely candidate that would be somewhat palatable. Metallica is another. Maybe Smashing Pumpkins?

Exactly. This is the new mainstream. The folks who grew up listening to these artists are the largest voting bloc in the country now and will soon control the vast majority of its wealth.

I was just happy to see something that was different. It felt like the Superbowl formula since nipplegate has been awful.

The set design was great, the acts all flowed together well, the local flavor was a very nice touch. I think catering the acts to center around the host location would be a great tradition to start.

I was surprised it took over an hour for this to show up on my Facebook feed. I would have set the over/under at 5 minutes and bet the under.

This all got me thinking about the legit history since 2004.

2005-2010: The "classic rock" era. AKA we're terrified of a mistake era.
    -Paul McCartney
    -Rolling Stones
    -Prince
    -Tom Petty
    -Bruce Springsteen
    -The Who

2011-2016: The "pop ensemble" era. AKA we're trying to appease everyone at the same time era.
    -Blackeyed peas, Usher, Slash
-Madonna, LMFAO, Nicki Minaj, Cee Lo Green
    -Beyonce & Destiny's child
    -Bruno Mars & RHCP
-Katy Perry, Lenny Kravitz, Missy Elliot
    -Coldplay, Beyonce, Bruno Mars

    2017-Present:
    -Lady Gaga
    -Justin Timberlake
-Maroon 5, Travis Scott, Big Boi
    -Shakira, J Lo, Bad Bunny
    -The Weeknd
-Dr. Dre, Snoop, Eminem, MJB, Kendrick Lamar

I highlighted the ones I felt were standouts, either because they tried something new, had exceptional production value, or were simply next level in terms of performer/artistry.

Overall the future is looking brighter. They seem to be rounding into form and are picking a lane and letting the artist(s) run with it instead of either playing it too safe or trying to go too broad.

You know who I think would put on an amazing Superbowl? The Roots. One of the best live performances I've ever been to.

I thought @rockbox post was funny bud I didn't get the Nirvana jab.

    Nirvana + Hip-Hop = early 90's pop radio.

Garth Brooks = early 90's country pop radio.
