Maybe there is not anyone out there that Lovie would want as a DC. He wants his defense to be ran and this way he can delegate to the position coaches and they can work his defense. I’m not privy to what coaches are available, just opining on the situation.

Absolutely true. But why not take whoever is #2 and make them the DC? It's an opportunity to give someone a promotion and to show you value whoever's that 2nd person. If you don't have anyone you like/trust enough in that role, that's seems like a problem.

Given that Lovie has said he's going to be calling the defense, it sounds like he'll be knee-deep in that side of the ball. Can't call the defense unless you've mastered the gameplan, etc.

Texans hire Grambling OC Ted White as an offensive assistant. Aaron Wilson says "offensive assistant." SWAC'N A FOOL reports it's to be the QB coach.

This is what Obrien did. Didn't want a strong voice on the offensive staff that could challenge him or bring new ideas. Remember when he wouldn't give the OC title? LOL

I don't care about Lovie calling the defense, but I will be disappointed if he's going to have a defensive staff with a bunch of yes men or inexperienced guys like Obrien did.

The word from Chicago was that Lovie had NOTHING to do with offense other than telling them to be conservative with the football.

I figured it was Cal being cheap since he's currently paying four people to do two jobs.

Cal seems like a dunce in public appearances but he definitely isn't cheap.

Are they still going to try to sneak in McCown with a last minute hire?
Because so far I'm liking the Pep hires.

I don't think McCown will be on the staff...because of the backlash. McCown needs to actually do some coaching.

Maybe they don't want to deal with the expected rise in pressure that comes with that title? Maybe they don't want to give out the expected raise in salary that comes with that title? Maybe that's how Lovie wants it? Its clear its not going to be a real coordinator role, given that Lovie is going to be controlling the defense. I still remember when Kubiak was fired and they promoted the "offensive coordinator" to start calling plays (Dennison?) and he had never called plays or had full command of the offense before.

Absolutely... which may be why he's not the best head coach choice if he is going to be fixated solely on the defense. Kubiak wasn't great either till they forced Wade on him.

I'm fine with Lovie running the defense. I'm not fine with him not having anyone in the fold he trusts to delegate DC responsibilities to, because being a HC is going to pull you away from the defensive side of the ball many times, especially in the middle of a game. You need to have a DC, if not in title, at least in practical terms, on staff. Assuming we don't have one by next year, Caserio needs to force his hand. This year, at worst, needs to be an audition/apprenticeship for next year's DC.

That's like when an entry level job wants you to have 3 years of experience...

Interesting...Caserio is on record saying that the Flores lawsuit didn't impact who they hired as coach, but we all know that was a lie. I see a lot of terrible takes being thrown around attacking Flores for being upset he wasn't hired, but the accusation is that the Texans disqualified him in retaliation for his lawsuit - not that he wasn't hired. Of the three remaining candidates (Flores, Gannon, and McCown) Flores was the most qualified and out of nowhere, Texans introduce Lovie Smith as the favorite. I hope all the shady details of the Texans' sham coaching search process are exposed.

Lol…good luck proving that an experienced, in house option at head coach proves that the process was a “sham.”
