Just to give you a sense for how stupid these protests are:

The US has a vaccine mandate for non-Americans that cross the land border. These Canadian truckers who are so mad at the government can't run cross border routes regardless of what the Canadian government imposes on its own border. Now the irony of all of this is that American truckers do not have a vaccine mandate when crossing US borders since American citizens are exempt from the vaccine mandate.

So by demanding that the Canadian government remove the mandate, these truckers would allow unvaccinated American drivers to run cross border routes but Canadian unvaccinated drivers would still be prohibited (since the American rules are still in effect). The Canadian government had to implement a vaccine mandate because the American government forced their hand by implementing the mandate on its own border. If anything, implementing the vaccine mandate protects Canadian trucking businesses by aligning regulations. Otherwise, you'd have a loophole where American companies could run routes with unvaccinated drivers while Canadian companies couldn't.

On a separate note, a lot of people here are ready to roll back regulations but these truckers have done themselves no favor and have somehow made the government look good. I think everyone now realizes that most of the restrictions here aren't stopping omicron from spreading but instead of highlighting this, these truckers are just reinforcing every stereotype that Canadians have about the far right. And unlike the US, these types are a much smaller minority and don't have the political sway that the right in the US has.

This type of stupidity is why the Conservative Party in Canada struggles to win federal elections (despite Trudeau having much lower popularity these days). Unlike the US, vaccine mandates are popular in Canada. Even among Conservatives, you get something like 70+ percent support for vaccine mandates. This isn't even an issue here. Every single province in Canada has a vaccine mandate for things like indoor dining, movies, gyms etc.. (even the hyper conservative provinces like Saskatchewan and Alberta). These idiot truckers are fighting a losing battle and they're losing any sympathy that people had for them.

We just wish it was over pay and working hours/conditions rather than not wanting to get vaccinated.
