We peaked around 250,000 cases per day back in January. Even if we sustained that crazy pace for a full year, that would infect less than 30% of the country. And that was when no one was vaccinated.

Delta does seem way worse in terms of its spread and I agree it will probably encourage younger people to get vaccinated as their friends get hospitalized, but spread also stops spread - once a lot of people have had, it creates a natural firewall to its spread, even when people aren't vaccinated. That's why the previous surges abated on their own.

That said, I love what France is doing to get their people vaccinated. They are requiring it go to movies, cafes, get on trains, etc. And they are eliminating free testing for dumbasses who don't get vaccinated. As a result, people are pissed and protesting, but also getting vaccinated at a rapid pace since the announcement.

If you're making the assumption that a 90% effective vaccine would mean 53 out 535 members would get infected, then you're presuming that 100% of people are being exposed and otherwise would get sick. If not, then 53 shouldn't get sick in that scenario.

That's not what happened here. None of these people had gotten Covid over the last month while in their districts or at the Capitol all throughout session, or while otherwise wandering around Texas. All of them got on a private plane together and were unmasked, and suddenly a bunch of them have Covid within days. It could be just a big coincidence and we can't *prove* causation, but it seems pretty obvious as the source of spread, just as we pointed to unmasked big church gatherings and such throughout the last year when we saw clusters form. 56 Dems fled. 5 tested positive for Covid (so far). It's pretty noteworthy given that most were vaccinated, meaning that it's pretty scary evidence of how well the Delta variant can spread.

Infected doesn’t mean sick and the vaccines show even a higher efficacy regarding preventing symptoms. That said yea it’s simplistic math but the point still stands the that the vaccines arent 100% effective so it shouldn’t be surprising that out of any large group of people there are a few vaccinated that still get infected.

Yes these are people who have a lot of exposure and standards have been relaxed and it appears that some of them got infected from exposure and relaxed standards.

I’m not really sure what you’re arguing here. Are you disagreeing that there should be the possibility of infection among a group of hundreds who have been vaccinated? Are you disagreeing that flying in a small plane maskless isn’t exposure and relaxed standards?

New Law Requires Texans to Have Counselling Before Being Allowed to Vote | The New Yorker

AUSTIN (The Borowitz Report)—Governor Greg Abbott has signed into law a bill requiring all Texans to submit to counselling before being allowed to vote.

The law mandates a counselling session and a twenty-four-hour waiting period before a voter is permitted to cast a ballot, Abbott explained.

“Many people who think that voting is something they have to do haven’t gotten all of the information available to them,” he said. “There are many alternatives to voting, including not voting.”

“Sometimes, a person is upset with their situation and thinks that voting is the only answer,” the Governor said. “A counsellor can sit with them, pray with them, and help them make the right choice.”

Answering critics who claim that the twenty-four-hour waiting period is designed to keep voters from casting their ballots in a timely fashion, Abbott said, “All we’re trying to do is make sure that voting is the right decision for them. Every day, I hear from people who voted for me who say that they’ll regret that decision for the rest of their lives.”

The thousands of hours and taxpayer funds the GOP wasted to find a handful of voter fraud cases didn't work. Now they are hell bent on rejecting ballots for technicalities so they can claim them as voter fraud. If that doesn't work their next step will be to overturn elections.

It seems so obvious what is going on with this. I can't believe anyone actually believes it is about election security.

They will do whatever it takes to maintain power, so that's no surprise. Democracy is a joke to Republicans.

Question is will people say, "my vote doesn't count anyway" and let people take their vote away - something others died to make sure they would have, or will they fight back?

impact likely is senior citizens for these mail-in ballots... unintended but nevertheless, Republicans under the pressure of Trump's Big Lie and their zest for suppressing you know who created these problems

just wait a bit longer... it takes some time but they will fine tune the target of their suppression
