I'm gonna let you guys support the bottled water industry. I'll stick to filtered tap water. :) This has got to be the biggest scam since the Pet Rock :

anyone see those machines that make water from air instantly? I remember I went to a consumer show a couple of months back and they had those out as a demo and it tasted pretty good. It actually converts the humidity into drinking water and cleans it as well, I thought it was pretty cool

So I'm supposed to feel bad about drinking bottled water?

I don't see the big deal. It's just water. And much easier for me to buy a bottle when I'm out.

Not too mention I live - quite literally - in the shadow of three chemical companies. I've tasted and smelled our local tap water.

I'll stick with the bottles, thanks.

I guess this means the Ozarka bottle that i refill from the water cooler at work is rather unsanitary?

As far as tap water goes just smelling the stuff here in Baton Rouge makes me want to drink only filtered.

This is BS. I've been refilling up water bottles for over a year and have been fine. I don't even wash it out with soap. They just want you to buy more bottled water.

If you guys ever go on a Navy ship, take a drink of their water. Best you will ever taste. The evaps on the ship blast it through a membrane so fine it can take out germs at mega-psi and it tastes tremendous. When I was in the Corps and aboard ship, I drank water every chance I could.

Are you sure that was clean water? I would think pure water wouldn't taste tremendous - it would taste... tasteless? :D

Ok first: What's the volume here? mL's? cc's? cups? liters? gallons? kiloliters? This is just stupid - if you don't tell me how many organisms per whatever, I'm not going to believe you.

second: Yes, those microbes can cause disease, if you're immunocompromised (sick or lowered immune system).

Coliforms such as E. coli are present and thrive quite well in your intestines. In fact, coliforms are the most abundant in your intestines, IIRC. Ultimately what this means is that somehow since these people have refilled their bottles, they have contaminated their own bottles with poop, which is completely gross, but it's not impossible to do. If you live a clean lifestyle, you won't have this problem. Wash your hands after you go to the bathroom and wash out your water bottle every night, or every other night, whatever. Just be clean people!

Now if they found Vibrio cholerae or the polio virus in there, I would be severely concerned.

Actually, no. I drink tap. Always have, and unless something forces me to change that, I never will. In fact, I don't think I own a water bottle.

I am just trying to say that the abundance of microbes, especially coliforms, is astounding. They can be found EVERYWHERE - the dirt, the water, your bowels - they're ubiquitous. So it's not surprising that some landed in some people's bottle. Like I said, if they would wash out their bottle and keep clean surroundings, it wouldn't be such a problem.

I thought the cool, hippie, pc, thing to do is to re-use a water bottle. (but not a corporate one)
