    He watches 39 games of inconsistent, defenseless basketball and decides to suit up again.....he cannot watch anymore.

    Probably to prevent circumventing salary caps and rules even though that is unlikely to happen. In theory if a player is allowed to be paid as a coach and player in the same season then it's possible for a team to avoid the luxury tax by paying someone part of their salary as a player and the rest as a coach to avoid going over the salary cap.

    It could also be used to pay someone above the max if a player collects both a coach and player salary. But Giannis already found a way around that by getting the Bucks to pay his brother as a player as well.

    I feel that this loophole can easily be closed by requiring the coaching salary be counted toward the playing salary if a team decides to convert a coach into a player.

    The vast majority of players who retire and become a coach do so when their playing days are becoming not viable. These guys aren't going to make a lot of money as a player anyway.
