This year we're not good enough for the play-in tournament, but next year that should be the goal. We won't get there by having a whole lot of projects with "potential" on the roster. Sengun is our project big man, we don't need a second. You may get Jalen Smith for cheap but it comes at the cost of a roster spot that could go to a more experienced big man. We need to start putting actual proven talent on the roster. Rookies selected in next year's draft should be the only developmental spots occupied.
Great jumper.... not good, not very good, but GREAT..... he would kill it as a roll man with Harden in his prime. He is benefitting a LOT from Chris Paul who is getting him a lot of open cuts to the basket. The rest of his game is predicated on his athleticism. He is long and wiry strong and physically just causes problems. He gets a lot of rebounds because of his physical talent. He can block some shots too, but isn't disciplined enough to be a good defender at this point. He wouldn't be putting up numbers on the Rockets because he wouldn't have even an average point guard on the Rockets passing him the ball and getting him out in transition. If he keeps playing well he will get more than the MLE. He would be smart to go to a team like the NETS or where a point guard really runs the offense. I could see the Rockets going after him if they get someone like Jaden Ivey in the draft, but even then there are questions about how good Ivey will be as a passer early in his career, and I am not sure how Sengun would fit in with the Rockets constantly running with Green/Ivey/Smith.
No, for right now the Rockets need to keep losing and trade away their veterans. The Rockets need to be accumulating young talent with an eye on the upcoming draft. Those young players that earn minutes should be getting all the minutes. Wood, Gordon and veterans that have value need to go. I don't mind the Rockets getting Smith, but he isn't going to play well with Porter and Green in the back court.
Maybe our definitions are different but how is Sengun a "project" big man? I'm one of his biggest advocates and nothing about Sengun screams "project". The dude played professional ball in the Turkish league and, by a host of metrics, has been one of the best players on this team as a rookie. All he needs is more consistent playing time with the starters and various growing pains (e.g. fouling too much) would be eliminated. Smith is a true "project" big man and one that this team can afford to take a flyer on if the cost is relatively low. Him taking a roster spot on this team over the "experienced big men" like Nwaba and Theis wouldn't be reason why this team wouldn't make a play-in game next season. This roster has exactly one player listed taller than 6'9" and that guy could be traded at any time between now and the offseason.
Yeah, unless Green really develops his playmaking, we are going to need a combo guard that can really run an offense and play smart. It's why on here I tinkered with wondering what the Rockets would have to trade to get Suggs to go with Green in last years draft. This year there is one elite combo guard, that's Jaden Ivey and his playmaking is just now developing..... and there really aren't any young star guards that can be traded for or signed as free agents. What complicates things for us is that we need a lead guard that also can defend well.... It's why I look at Jaden Ivey as likely the best fit for the Rockets in this draft.
Suns didn't pick up his contract because dude looked like a total bust up until a week ago. Played like a stiff and was absolutely chucking in summer league this year. Like 30% from the field on 10+ attempts chucking. Glad he's turning it around. I think being "overdrafted" hurt his development and confidence a bit.
Yeah.... I mean the athleticism and size is obvious, he can literally hit his head on the rim and is very quick off the ground.... I see why the Suns took him, the upside to someone with those traits that also has work ethic and an understanding of the game is really high.... the problem is that I haven't ever heard him called a hard worker, and while he isn't Stromile Swift dumb (he knows basic things) he isn't exactly Sengun out there.... so I think there is some fools gold when he isn't next to Chris Paul.
Patiently waiting for Alex Len to change his first name to Ja, so we can trade for or sign Ja Len. We can never have enough Jalens. NEVER.
No the play in tournament should not be the goal next year, especially if it comes at the price of trying to fill this team with as much young talent as possible. There are no guarantees that rookies from next year's draft will be better than this guy, especially since we don't know where we are going to draft. If a team is building a roster just get too get in the playin tournament they are doing it wrong.
