The whole Free John Wall gimmick was frustrating. The audacity of Wall demanding all of his money in the contract in a buy out, so he could go play with his friends; not agreeing to an agreeable contract reduction. But his stupid attempt (and those of his buddies attempt) to make the Rockets like the bad guys failed miserably. Rockets can afford to have Wall sit on his rump, because the inexperienced youth is getting paid relatively low. Plus the fans expectations are very much for growth of the youth movement over playoff competition. So joke was on Wall and his fake sentiments about wanting to play; Wall showed his true colors and it’s about green backs filling his balance sheet.
start him the 10 games leading up to the trade deadline. if he balls out, we maybe get a nice return in a trade. if he sucks, we sit him after the deadline to continue the tank and try the same strategy next year.
Big part of that was the schedule the Rockets had lined up…and it made sense considering the Rockets went on the long winning streak right after all that started. My guess is that Wall and Rich Paul were hoping Wall would play those games, Rockets would win a bunch (which they did anyway), and they could sell that to a team to come get him. Now, the schedule is tougher, COVIDs floating around, and the Rox basically said no thank you after calling around the league and getting told that no one is going to trade for him…even if he put up 40 PPG during that time. Rox then likely reiterated that they’d be happy to buy him out if he’d take less money…to which Wall backed away quietly.
Shams: Houston Rockets Teams are expressing interest in Rockets guard John Wall should he become free on the market, sources say, but a trade or buyout remains unlikely. Wall has a whopping $91.7 million remaining on his contract through next season. He is currently not playing for the Rockets after the sides discussed in late November about him potentially playing.
The fool's gold November Rain is over. Time to break the glass and bring back Wall. He's better than DJ and KPJ
That is a lot of pressure on Green.....I think that the Rockets have numerous guys that they need to develop - and none of them have broken out yet, though Green and Sengun look the most likely. DD
agreed, under the condition that we move Gordon …and maybe Augustine as well. I think u play Wall for: 1). Make him earn his money 2). Showcasing for an offseason trade 3). Hopefully good for Green’s development 4). Not gonna tip the scales on an early lotto pick
The question is what people mean by significant buyout. Wall is set to make: 2021-22 $44,310,840 2022-23 $47,366,760 Like @studogg said, Houston would only consider a buyout next year if Wall would give up a least $30 million next season. And highly unlikely anyone would want to trade for a 31 year old PG making $18 million who hasn't played much in two years. At the end of the day Wall is here until that contract expires unless he personally did something INSANE like tell his team he would take a pay cut to league minimum that final year just because he wants to play again. (NOT HAPPENING!)
I think this is right. The prospect that we could trade Wall regardless of play was always dubious at best given his contract. That said, we build in that $47 mil for 2023 free agency and contract extensions. We’ve come so far, we can hold him one more year. And there’s a good chance someone even gives us a pick for his expiring contract if we are willing to take on a little salary. This Wall thing is no longer an albatross. It’s about to become an asset.
John Wall seems entrenched in Houston with zero inclination to accept any type of buyout, sources said. https://bleacherreport.com/articles...ame-lillard-surgery-impact-ben-simmons-market
