Apparently the reason NBA players can’t change mid-season is that small businesses who sell jerseys would be stuck with merchandise they can’t sell. It’s a rule for the little guys. It sucks Green can’t have his number back yet, but at least he knows for sure he’ll get it back next year - certainty is better than uncertainty. He can think of ‘0’ as a rite of passage, and there are enough Rockets ‘fans’ who treat him like such after bad games.
michael jordan changed his jersey from 45 to 23 midseason according to the Last Dance - I think it was after 1 game. JG should get the MJ treatment!
I also believe MJ got fined for every game he played with the #23 jersey. Not sure if a rookie contract can afford that kind of cost.
he got fined heavily for it. On the other hand the nba went with it because his jersey sales were all time best sells
Ridiculous. House doesn’t owe anyone his jersey number, especially a rookie. Not to mention he was a major contributor on excellent teams here. I held off on buying a Green jersey because I know he would eventually be switching to 4, but just giving it to him wouldn’t have been right. He could have worn 44. And like we all knew would happen sooner or later, 4 is now available, so it worked out
I am all in on this current timeline where Jalen Green takes his lumps this year and remains one of the worst rotation players in the league using #0, then when he makes the expected year 2 leap like Anthony Edwards, it just happens to coincide with him switching to the #4. The before/after memes are going to have unlimited potential. And someday, after he retires, the legend is going to be that the Rockets specifically cut House because Green told them to, rather than because House had no trade value and was averaging less than 5ppg on 34% shooting.
The house that House built lays in ashes. Are you saying retire it in honor of the fact that it's finally over?
Other number 4's Greg Smith 1972-1973 Paul McCracken 1973-1974 Rick Barry 1979-1980 Conner Henry 1987 Sam Mack 1996 Charles Barkley 1997-2000 Reece Gaines 2005 Stromile Swift 2006 Luis Scola 2008-2012 Greg Smith 2013-2014 P.J. Tucker 2018 Danuel House 2019-2022
If we trade for a player with the #0, then someone has to change numbers! any scrub will do. In fact, Jay Scrubb on the Clippers is #0. here’s the whole list
