Just a side note. Transparency died with the Trump admin. They probably also broke federal record-keeping laws. Does anyone still remember the private email server scandal that lasted 100 men years?

Except for the crazies (unfortunately, there maybe quite a few of them now), I rarely hear anyone agree with it. It's an extremely shameful and embarrassing chapter in Trump's presidency (and US history). What's also shameful is the need to protect Trump and twist the truth. From the texts, you can almost hear inklings of Fox News and other Trump's folks concerned about his legacy. And yet.. publicly they started lying for him. We see efforts by Fox News to twist the truth during, right afterward and it continues today. It has now accumulated into Carlson’s Patriot Purge 3-part documentary series.

While many do not agree with it, too many sympathize with it due to Fox News and other truth twisters.

Comparing it to the riots during the summer of 2020 is a false equivalence. Rioting in the wake of George Floyd's murder was not done with the organized goal of overturning our system of government. I'm sure there are some incendiary quotes out there from formal BLM leaders or Portland LARPers that advocate for the destruction of the modern American state, but that's the difference: those radicals are advocating for something and don't have the ability to do what they're calling for.

The purpose of January 6, both among the rioters and the GOP Congressmen who formally objected to delegates from Pennsylvania, Georgia, Arizona, etc. was to stop the peaceful transition of power to Joe Biden and seize power against the will of the American voters.

There's a difference between burning down a Target and burning down our system of government for the sake of Donald Trump.

And cost? I really do wonder what Trumpist Republicans think the economic cost of overturning an American election by force and subversion would be. Do they think that global markets would shrug that off and go along as if it were business as usual? The word of the United States would mean nothing going forward if that were allowed to happen. Forget about the utter moral abdication of America on the world stage if Donald Trump would've succeeded in this gambit. Everything that the Trump base claims to love - freedom, jobs "coming back", "standing up to China," etc. - would be completely and utterly undone because of the resulting economic fallout from a genuine coup by a loser incumbent.

 

In that sense, equating jan 6 to conservatives is false. 99.95% of conservatives had no interest in being in Washington that day. The ones that did, went.

 

january 6th was far more destructive to our democracy and our government and that is not debatable.

but they are trying to shift blame for it, lie about it, make excuses for it and try to cover up.

The alt right tried to storm the Capitol and stop the certification of a legitimate election for President of the United States during a joint session of Congress…you still don’t realize the worldwide implications of allowing this to happen? Get the **** of Facebook and Twitter boomer…

The voting record of the GOP when it comes to counting the electoral votes from the 2020 election, the second impeachment of Donald Trump, removing Liz Cheney from leadership, the ongoing January 6 committee, etc. shows that the number is certainly not "99.95%". They're appeasing a base of voters or else they're going against the wishes of their constituents.

From a sheer % of "conservatives"/republicans/trump supporters the % of people that stormed the Capital was small, but if you look at those that supported/defended/and had direct or indirect involvement (something the January 6 Commission is finding out about) the % and numbers including leading members of "conservatives"/republicans/trump supporters is significant. And that group included members of our government including members of congress, local government, military, law enforcement, media, and party leaders (including the outgoing president and leading candidate for the 2024 republican presidential nomination).
