I don't consider it letters to be nicknames. The Microwave, that's a nickname. JD that's just an an abbreviation.
There are some exceptions like Little J from Gossip girl. Not that I watched that or anything.

There was also a part in the broadcast were Hollins playfully got offended at "Garry Bird."
That was funny.
