Well, he's off the mkt but didn't want him at all with substantial injury history. Mullens and K. Marte are the only other CF trade targets

So that takes the Rangers out of the Correa sweepstakes then.

Wow that's huge. Curious what the AAV is. Correa is a better defender at SS but Semien is almost as good at playing 2B - I imagine that's where he'll play mostly? You can make the argument Semien has more pop and is maybe more consistent/less streaky, but if I'm Correa I want a richer deal.

7 years 175 million for Semien. That's nuts.

    That's $25M annually.

How do you think this affects Correa's market. He'll definitely want more per year, I imagine he wants more total and probably 7 years as well as he is younger.

Going to be a lot of pressure for these guys to get deals in place before the lockout.

The 25 million dollar AAV is not surprising. The 7 year is a little shocking, but a team as bad as the Rangers has to overpay to bring a big free agent. I bet they blew the other offers away by a lot.

Correa was seeking a LONG deal already. This doesn't really change that in my eyes, but hard to say Correa should even consider something shorter than 10 years when a 31 year old received a contract that will pay him to age 37-38.

yes but what craptastic team is going to offer 10 years? You said it, TX likely had to pony up extra years to win bidding war.

we need to see Detroit ink Baez. If they’re out, then Correa’s market shrinks considerably.

So Correa’s floor is set at $175M/7yrs. $260M/9yrs would be my new guess for where Correa ends up.

Of course it’s the contract length that’s surprising. I bet he could have gotten 5/150 from someone else so it’s what teams are willing to pay for the back end when he’s likely mediocre that’s interesting. I’m sure if Astros are hesitant about 7 years for Correa there’s no way they were going 6 or 7 on Semien. But he’s been awesome in 2 of the last 3 seasons.

I can’t imagine that’s correas floor. I think the 7 years are the floor, but the AAV has to be higher. I’d assume 30MM AAV over 7 years is the floor, and 6/210 has been floated as an offer Astros have already made.

I agree it is extremely likely that Correa gets more than Semien, that’s why I pegged Semien’s contract as Correa’s absolute floor.

The Rangers signing Semien to a deal of that magnitude is good news for the Astros chances of keeping Correa. They were the most likely team to do something crazy and offer the 10/300 deal Correa wants.

They’re still likely to pursue other FA bats it sounds like. But more likely in the Story type range (money-wise) and not Correa. Can’t imagine them somehow giving Correa the contract he wants after already giving Semien $175 million.
