Isn't this just prideful pettiness? If you hold onto him until he reaches UFA status, he gets to walk while the Texans get nothing. Sure, you get to point the finger at Watson and laugh as he's essentially wasted his prime years, but at what cost?

I get not caving into a player's demands because this sets a bad precedence, but at the same time, you're trying to improve your team. One upping a singular player at the cost of your franchise being bad just isn't a good look.

Yes it absolutely is extremely petty. Probably temporary in my case. Beyond frustrated with Watson and the Texans

610 had a good point today about the Giants being a possible contender for Watson. They will probably have 2 of the top 7 picks in this draft and apparently Joe Judge and Caserio have a relationship.

Something to keep an eye on.

Yeah, Texans pay Watson $160MM to do nothing for the next 4 years, while the Texans lose valuable salary cap room to a player they don't play and and harm their franchise for the next decade due to lost draft picks. That'll show him!

That said, it would be a very Texan-like thing to do.

It will show him. It’s not like they’re going to do anything anyway

Watson is going to settle. You are probably going to see a trade late February/early March.

What I don't understand is why is everyone focusing on getting multiple picks for this draft? I'd rather have it spread out, like lets get someones first round pick for the next 3 or 4 years. That was if Caserio screws them up then hopefully he'd be gone and someone new would be able to pick players instead.

A hypothetical giants trade means they definitely get at least 2 top 10 picks. A hypothetical Dolphins trade means they get the 49ers pick which could end up being #20 or worse and if Watson helps the Dolphins become a playoff team going forward all 3 picks could be in the 20’s.

They will force him to play and if he refuses they will fine him.

No, they won't. Again, the Texans want nothing to do with Watson. They could be forcing him to play now if they wanted to go this route. From starting Taylor, it's clear they didn't want to be starting Mills if they didn't have to. Or they could have activated him and made him the backup or 3rd string QB if they want to force him to refuse so they can fine him. They didn't. - they just want him to go away.

It's amusing that fans are so pissed about Watson demanding a trade after signing an extension. Watson doesn't want to play for the Texans; the Texans don't want Watson to play for them. The Texans haven't paid a dime on the extension. If Watson simply hadn't signed the extension (as people seem to prefer), the Texans would simply release Watson after the season for nothing. Instead, they have the potential to get several free picks - at no cost to them since the extension $$ don't kick in until after the season.

The franchise is so f-ed up that they've convinced fans that the smart course of action is to repeatedly cut off their nose to spite their face, and they are pissed at the Watson for signing a contract that only benefits the Texans.

They can let him sit this year and not force anything at his cap number. They have no choice but to force it when the extension kicks in. Which if it comes down to it, that’s what they should do.

The Texans tried to get Watson onboard with the new coaching staff, front office personnel, etc. Watson wanted nothing to do with the team after they chose the GM and coach without him.

Even after all the allegations, the Texans would have played Watson if he had gotten onboard. The fact that he refused to play for the Texans again made it easy for the team to “wash their hands of him.”

Caserio is playing this right, don’t be in a hurry to trade Watson until you get what you want or get more bidders in the game.

Of course I want to trade Watson for picks.

But I also wouldn't mind them making him sit out his prime years. That would make for some great entertainment over the years and isn't that what sports are truly for? Entertainment

    True and an ideal situation.

If you were to get the Giants picks. You could trade down and get a 2nd plus a 2022 1st. Twice if you wanted to go that route.

Then you could theoretically do that again in 2023, depending on how the Giants/Texans finish the 2022 season. It's actually a pretty smart way to do business. Gotta hit on your picks in rds 1-2 though.

The reason you don't want to spread it out, is because a future draft pick isn't as valuable as a current one is.

Especially if it involves trading a superstar talent like Deshaun. You may get 3 first rounders, but what happens if it's 1 early pick, then 2 late picks. As opposed to taking a deal with Philly or something, and now you can get 3 solid play makers who all have the same contract window.

This shows that Casserio is playing it right. Right now we have Philadelphia, Miami, maybe NY, New Orleans ought to be looking, Panthers, Washington, Pittsburg?, Atlanta? If Watson settles there will be a bidding war. I hope Phili and there 3 picks next year wins.

Sorry this is not logical. Getting high picks this year, 3 top 10 from Philadelphia, is much more preferable. Watson will improve any team he goes to, so the picks in future years will be degraded.

I could agree if he's on the roster next year. But I think the Texans absolutely want to be done with him going into next year. They'll trade him for the best offer they get, even if that turns out to be something mediocre (ie, if his legal issues aren't resolved or whatnot).
