i think nazar would fit well with the rockets, he is not a great shot blocker but we have Griffin. he pulls down a lot of boards for minutes played. i like marc jackson as well but he looks to be injury prone. nazar will cost 5-6 million per year. i would not sign him for more than 3 years to cut the risk factor, which there is. he is young and has a ton of potential. he played 28 minutes per game in atlanta 12pts 9 boards. he will not start when ratliff comes back. my line up.

    Mohommed: C (FA)
    Taylor: PF
    Griffin: SF
    Mobley: SG
    Francis: PG

    Kato: C
    K Thomas: PF
    Williams: SF
    Felipe Lopez: SG (FA)
    Norris: PG

    Collier (bench)

Langhi (Bench)(can be a Bullard if they let him)

Ben Eze (6-10 235 7-6 inch wingspan, undrafted rookie, cap freindly) bench

    gone: Olajuwon, Rogers, Anderson, Bullard

Erm, in terms of who would I prefer, I'd say Nazr Mohammed.

I don't know why you think he's such a bad shot-blocker, he averages 0.5/ game in just 11 minutes - 1.0 as a starter in 26 mpg, that's not terrible.

In terms of center prospects, if the physical health problems (back) attributed to Loren Woods don't seem to be an issue after his year or two with Minnesota, would anyone be interested in acquiring him as our longterm center? Shoot, if a possibility existed of prying him from Minnesota without much cost on our part, would anyone be interested in acquiring him now, question marks and all? I must say, I like Terence Morris. I'm very, very glad we got him, but I can't help wondering about what if we'd traded down for Woods instead.

Here's my breakdown of what I feel we want from our center position:

    Need:
    - solid defensive presence in the middle
    - good rebounding skills
    - ability to hit at least 15ft. from the basket

    Nice:
    - can bang/decently guard a sizable, opposing 5
    - excellent shot-blocking skills
    - great rebounder
    - some post-up ability
    - decent to good free-throw shooter
    - not stuck to the floor

I understand a lot of 'Need' and 'Nice' overlap. But the reason I like Woods (minus health problems, of course) is that he covers a lot of both lists, in my opinion. I think with his height, wingspan, shot-blocking ability, he's definitely a presence in the middle, even if he might not be able to shut down a strong 5 posting up. He also doesn't seem like a great rebounder, but aside from that he's got practically everything else on the list. Especially with zone, where Woods wouldn't have to (or should) guard Shaq, other big centers by himself, I think Woods is very close to our (my) ideal center of the future, particularly since he can open it up inside for Stevie and Cuttino with his outside shot.
I don't think it makes sense looking to the draft for our center of the future. Any big man coming out will be raw, inherently risky or out of range of our 20-something first rounder. [IMG] And with Houston still owing Vancouver/Memphis a Top-15 pick next year, I don't see us having leverage in the draft anywhere close to what we've enjoyed this year. I am optimistic about our chances of attracting or trading for a good solution at center in years to come, though, because of the quality of the Rockets organization and the exciting core we're putting together that will hopefully mature to a force to be reckoned with. Any thoughts?

    Relativist,
If Woods works out in Minnesota They will not be so quick to let him go. And in a couple of years we probably won't have any cap space anyway.

If we sent Walt to Orlando for Outlaw, that would leave KT in the dark as far as PT...I don't think they would play a 6'8" guy as a backup C in the West, and he wouldn't start over MoTay or CWebb anyway, so that means he fights for time with KT. Personally, KT and Outlaw are very similar players, to me. They both hustle, they both play bigger than their size, and both need to do so, since they are a bit undersized.

The main difference is that Outlaw is much older and polished, while KT is much younger and less refined. I have always liked Bo Outlaw because he was a UH product, but I don't think it would be very beneficial to trade for him on this team. We need to concentrate more on the C and starting PF problem than backup PF.

Rockets need power forward. Mo near now. Go near Mo.

You can Run from the bet, you can Rave at the bet...but you just can't hide.

I like Nazr much more than I like Jackson. Anyways, I've heard that if Toronto doesn't resign Antonio Davis, that they will throw alot of money at Jackson. Midnight Sun, I also like you adding Felipe Lopez via free agency, I think he'd be a good, cheap 4th guard on this team. Also as opposed to waiving Walt, I think he'll be part of some trade, possibly Bo Outlaw to Houston?
