Yep. They can use Urquidy or Javier as a primary piece in a trade if needed. Signing Verlander at $25M likely takes Correa, Seager, and Bryant off the table as $50M+ for just 2 guys would likely eat all their open payroll. From here I’d like to see: Sign Marte or trade for Buxton Sign McHugh Trade for Hader or Rogers Sign Simmons, Iglesias, Galvis, Garcia, or Villar Be opportunistic for another SP, maybe an upside free agent like Paxton or an ace from another team like Alcantara
More likely they move Odorizzi and his salary. Personally I think Odorizzi would be fine as our #5, but it's obvious him and Dusty don't see eye to eye so I think its likely him and his salary are moved
They likely don't bring back JV and he doesn't agree to stay if there isn't a commitment to extend this window. Excited to see the next couple of moves. #RunItBack (?)
If they sign/resign one of those big targets they don't really need to add anything else of consequence. Don't think they will sign one of those expensive guys, but the Verlander deal has nothing to do with it.
If they can get Alcantara without giving up Lee or Pena, I think they have to go for it. Signing Verlander for 25 a year makes trading Lee or Pena for a star much less likely IMO. I think they have those two locked into their plans for 2022 and 2023. If Javier + McCormick + Hunter Brown + Joe Perez can get it done for Alcantara, I say go for it.
Problem is the Marlins need bats. Doubtful they trade any of their good SP for a package built around pitching. I still think an Urquidy for Buxton, Rogers, and PTBNL makes a lot of sense for both sides.
Javier is a future Ace... He attacks better than most... Yes he gives up a homer or 2 but he's more than capable of tossing 5 hitless innings after a troublesome one...
His mindset is that of an ace... Now whether he's an ace on a championship caliber team like ours is a bit of a stretch, I agree... But if he's traded, I can see him being a no.1 for a young up and coming squad... Maybe even being in a Cy Young race or 2 in the near future... I just think he has that dog within him ...
Some starters will be relievers. Maton will get a chance to be high leverage for the season. They'll be able to pick up a Stanek-like signing here/there if needed.
They're not parting with cheap club controlled pitching that has been effective at the MLB level. Odorizzi can be a salary dump if needed. They're still going to keep after Correa but I doubt they go after any other big ticket player just to sign a big ticket player.
